r. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director General,
gave the following advice on how to protect ourselves and
others from COVID-19. Be safe from coronavirus infection.
Be smart and inform yourself about it. Be kind and support one
another. During this unprecedented time it is important to not only
follow this sound advice in our approach of COVID-19, but also in
our approach to medicine and our patients.
We live in a time where inequality has been magnified. Systemic
racism and social inequality are more apparent than ever. It is our
duty to our community to provide a safe environment for our patients.
We are their voice for medical equality. We must reflect on our own
implicit biases and ensure equal treatment despite race, gender, sexual
orientation, and economic status. I plan on bringing these issues to
light through articles, social media, and expert speaker engagements.
We must advocate for prior authorization reform to remove the
harmful burden that delays patient care. The safety of our patients is
paramount. The York County Medical Society will continue to support
the Prior Authorization Coalition to demand prior authorization
reform.
We must be smart and informed when it comes to vaccine safety
and efficacy. As physicians it is our duty to stay up to date with
new studies and help to promote vaccinations in order to reach herd
immunity. During this age of misinformation in the media and the
internet, we should continue to provide evidence-based information
to our community. I plan to expand our use of social media in
order to provide a sound foundation for our community to combat
misinformation.
