One of the most unique characteristics
of the Edgar Square Clinic is that there
are surgical residents and medical students
involved in all aspects of outpatient care.
The patients that arrive in this clinic are
assessed not only by the surgical residents
but also by a board-certified general
surgeon. A well-rounded general surgical
training involves exposure to an outpatient
setting; this clinic provides the unique
opportunity for chief surgical residents
(residents in their last year of training) to
be immersed in each patient's care from
the start, providing a great continuity of
care. This clinic allows the same chief
resident to evaluate a patient during the
pre-operative visit, help to perform the
surgery, and then provide post-operative
follow-up treatment. These experiences
are invaluable to the residents, and this is
the only place where this type of autonomy
is available for outpatient surgical resident
education in York.
Health insurance coverage is a
frequent question, and this clinic has the
ability to see patients with and without
insurance. If the patient has no insurance,
the administrative and nursing staff will
assist with enrolling the patient with the
HealthyCare card. Therefore, any urgent
and necessary surgical care will not be
delayed due to lack of insurance coverage.
In addition, this clinic has become a
welcoming place for our Hispanic patient
population. Spanish language translators
are provided during appointments to
minimize any communication barriers.
Furthermore, a telephone Language Line
can be utilized, and over 30 languages are
available for the patients.
The Edgar Square Outpatient
Specialty Clinic has the ability to care
for all patients in York with a surgical
problem. These include small bowel
issues, colon (cancer and diverticulitis),

breast disease, skin lesions, soft tissue
masses, gallbladder disease, and wound care.
Common procedures performed include
colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, and removal
of minor skin lesions, as well as incision and
drainage of abscesses.
