The York County
Medical Society

T

he York County Medical Society represents
physicians in York County, in service to all
York County physicians and patients, and in
collaboration with stakeholders in healthcare. We promote
health and wellness, advocating always for ethics and dignity
among physicians. We help physicians provide accessible,
high quality, state-of-the-art, cost-effective healthcare.

We aim to:
* Preserve the strong physician-patient relationships which
underlie the profession of medicine
* Improve our patients' health by promoting healthy
communities, serving as a resource for medical information,
providing clinical expertise to health-related agencies of
community and government, and facilitating quality and
technological health system improvements
* Engage physicians and enhance professional satisfaction
across specialties, employers, and generations through
information, leadership, advocacy, and collegial activities
* Coordinate educational, media, and advocacy initiatives
with the Pennsylvania Medical Society and American
Medical Association

Examples of what we do...

* YCMS Strand Capitol Theatre Endowment Fund
* York County Medical Foundation - The charitable arm of
YCMS.
Locally: Supports health organizations and initiatives
which benefit the York County community.
Nationally: Provided start-up funds for New Orleans
Women's Health Clinic after Hurricane Katrina.
Internationally: Sri-Lanka Tsunami Building Project;
Foundation medical mission teams to Laos; financial
support of orphanage in India following Tsunami; medical
mission work with numerous children/adults from third
world countries brought to York for life-saving medical
treatment/surgery unavailable in their homelands.

Why should I join organized medicine?
Organized medicine represents physicians and their positions
to the public; the media; the legislature; and other parties.
Represents medicine's views at the time of law-writing and
rule-making:
* Brings physicians' view points before the courts as a friend
of the court (Amicus curiae), usually at the appellate level.
* Some issues of interest needing medicine's input are:
The Governor's plans for health care reform in Pennsylvania.

* Grassroots support of PAMED and AMA legislative and
regulatory initiatives.

Health Care policy at the national level:

* Medically Speaking community education program with
White Rose Community TV.

The candidates for the next administration

* YCMS Financial Aid Program for York County medical
students.
* Physician liaison with the media.
* Active member of Healthy Community Network, which

provides access to medical care for the uninsured and
underinsured.

Continuing education in your specialty is well-handled by the
various specialty societies, however, representation requires that
the medical profession speak with a single voice.
