To receive the most enjoyment from
a water feature requires planning. One
of the first considerations is the type of
water feature you desire and have space
for - a fountain, a pondless feature, patio
pond, inground pond or a pond with the
addition of a waterfall and/or stream. A
visit to your local pond professional retail site, the library or websites is highly
recommended. The time spent planning
and gaining knowledge is critical to a
successful project.

As you plan your project, there
are other considerations:
* Local ordinances, permit requirements and safety considerations - Do
you need a permit? Must you fence the
pond for safety?
* Pond Location - where will you place
the pond so that will you be able to
enjoy it? Does it get enough sunlight for
the plants?
* What size pond do you want and
what size will fit in the desired area?
Expected costs and budget restraints will
impact decisions concerning the type
and size of your project - a larger pond
is easier to maintain a good biological
balance so, make the pond as large as
you can.
* Time and Ease of Maintenance.
Good planning and choosing the proper
filtration will reduce the amount of time
that you will need to maintain your
pond. Out of the water, pressurized filter
units make maintenance much easier.
Spend the money on great filtration and
you will reap the benefits for years to
come!
* Adding an Ultra-violet light. After
spending the time, energy and money to
install a beautiful pond, the addition of a
UV insures that the water will be crystal
clear. Green-water algae is a plant and
the best way to insure that it is not in
your pond is by the use of a UV that is
properly sized and rated for the size of
the pond.

* Are you planning on including Goldfish or Koi? How many fish would you
like? What type of fish? Should Koi be
desired, a much larger pond is required
and the amount of fish (and therefore
fish-inches) will be part of the filtration
and UV requirements.
* Electrical requirements - can you
get electric near the area that you want
to install your pond? Talk to your local
electrician.

So put on your 'thinking cap', planplan-plan, stretch your back, grab your
shovels and GO.
