FROM THE PRESIDENT

T

his a CALL TO ACTION. I am looking to ALL the
current members of the HBA. I am asking for you
to be more engaged with the HBA. I am finishing
my first year as president of the HBA. I have attended
every committee and board meeting. We have a lot to offer
to members. The one thing that I notice is that the vast
majority of committee and board members have been on
these boards and committees for a few years. I am looking
for new faces around the table, or in most cases Zoom
screen.

For those of you who are the main members, I am very
interested in speaking with you. If you are too busy with the
daily operations of your business, then PLEASE delegate to
one of your employees. Sign them up as an affiliate member.
This is how I started initially as a member of the Home
Show Committee.
I am only the second president of the HBA who is an
associate member. As an associate member that person
has the similar benefits that they are able to use, from car
rentals, to vehicle purchasing. That employee can be your
conduit to make sure that the HBA is aware of what is going
on with your business. What is unique about your business
that the HBA can help you with? If you are not at our
meetings how are we going to know what you need?
The HBA is part of a larger set of associations. We are
associated with the PBA and the NAHB. In the past year,
as we are all aware, some of us were not able to do our jobs
due to COVID-19. It was the PBA that worked with the PA
state government to get us back to work. This is what the
association is doing for you. Sometimes we do not see the
value of our membership. The HBA is also working on a
new insurance coverage plan for members. The plan even
provides small business access to an HR professional.
One final item that I have is networking opportunities.
I want to point out that I feel the committee and board

meetings provide a networking
opportunity for members to work
with other members. While we have
not been able to have golf outings
or a Thirsty Thursday event, we
talk before and after the meetings,
trading stories, and sometimes
you run into a new prospect. I will
also say that there is a program
in the PBA for members doing
business with other members. I really enjoy working with
members and referring work to them. I will tell you that I
have referred work to Aluminum Associates, and they have
referred work to me at SAH Incorporated. To me, this is
where I feel the membership pays for itself. It is easier to
obtain work by a referral of a great member than it is to get
work from cold calls or however you get leads.
