Change and the Remodeling Outlook
report, growth in the remodeling market
will largely be driven by aging homeowners
looking to adapt their homes so they are able
to remain in them.

Kert Sloan, president of Aluminum Associates in Muhlenberg Township and former president of the Home Builders Association of Berks County, is a certified aging in place specialist
who has worked with many older homeowners to assure that
their homes remain safe and manageable places for them to live.
After completing a two-tier course and passing an exam, Sloan
was certified by the National Association of Home Builders.
At Home in Berks asked Sloan to share his thoughts and
expertise about aging in place, and how he helps homeowners
to achieve that goal.

Why is it so important to many homeowners to be
able to stay where they are?
Moving is a difficult task for almost anyone, Sloan said, but
especially for an older person who has lived in the same place
for many years. Besides the actual physical work of sorting
through possessions, deciding what to keep and what to get rid
of, and packing, there is a lot of emotional work involved with
a move.
Older people who have to move may feel like they're leaving
behind their memories, or even a spouse with whom they
shared the home who has passed away. They must part with
items that are valuable to them.
"It can be a real sense of loss," Sloan said. "Home is where
your memories are, and it's where you're most comfortable. To
have to leave that behind can be incredibly difficult for anyone,
especially an older person."
