FROM THE PRESIDENT

I

have been president of the Berks County HBA for about
nine months and I must say that the past seven months
have been interesting to say the least. The one constant
has been change. To me fall is a season that is all about
CHANGE. So, using that as a little inspiration, here are my
thoughts on this upcoming season of change.
I would like to talk about the 2021 Home Show. On
March 19, 20 and 21st of 2021 we are planning to be back at
the Crowne Plaza as in the previous three years. The home
show committee has been hard at work to make sure that
we bring the most people to the event. The committee has
made some changes to how we sign up. Right now, we are
looking to see who is interested in attending. Deposits to
reserve your space are not due until January 31, 2021. We
want to know who is interested in being at the 2021 HBA
Home Show.
We are bringing back Dr. Lori in 2021. She was a great
draw in 2019, unfortunately she was not available in
February of 2020. So please look for a postcard that is
going out about contacting the HBA if you are interested in
being at the 2021 HBA Home Show. I will tell you that SAH
Incorporated, the company that I work for, is already signed
up for the show. There are several other companies that are
also signed up.
I will mention that we were fortunate in 2020 since our
home show was actually two weeks earlier than normal.
Because of that earlier date we were not shut down due to
COVID-19. There were several local associations that did
not have a show, or it was closed just as they were setting up.
Since becoming president of the HBA in January of this
year I have tried to attend all of the committee meetings
that we have from Education, Government Affairs, Home
Show, Membership and Events to the Executive, Finance,
Property and board meetings. Currently all of our meetings

since March have been held via
Zoom. There have been very few
in-person meetings. I have found
the change to meeting virtually to
be a very efficient way to have the
meetings as there is no travel time
to and from the HBA office in West
Lawn.
One of the things that I would
like to see is more builder members
sitting on the board or joining our numerous committees.
I would like to see more builder members involved with
their association. If you as the main contact cannot spare
the time maybe you would like to give the opportunity to
someone else in your organization to attend meetings. You
can add an associate member for only thirty dollars.
By the way, I am an associate member, and only the
second associate member who has moved up to president
since the HBA of Berks County has been around. James
Gavin was the first. That is how I began going to Home
Show meetings back in 2016, as an associate. I have always
said I get more out of attending the committee and board
meetings, than I put in. The ability to meet with your peers
in other associated trades and working together to improve
our association is what keeps bringing me back. I am also
able to bring back things that I can incorporate into the
business that I work for.
