Creative ways to foster comaraderie and teambuilding
with	your	office	staff 	or	family	and	friends.	

A

s	a	manager	I	enjoy	finding	new	ways	to	boost	
morale, create a positive focus, and strengthen
my	office	team.		I	like	to	incorporate	celebrations	
around	traditional	holidays,	unofficial	holidays,	
different genre of games, and community service projects.
Not only do I perceive positive results when using
unconventional ways to achieve this goal within my own
staff but I have found it successful in creating memorable
outcomes with family (immediate and extended); with
friends; when coaching youth sports; also with colleagues
and the professional organizations to which I belong.

I belong to several professional organizations. A rewarding
membership has been with PAHCOM (Professional
Association	of 	Health	Care	Office	Management)	which	
was established in 1988 and is a national organization with
several chapters located around the country. The Delco
Chapter of PAHCOM is right here in Delaware County. To
many of us managers in this area PAHCOM, along with the
Delaware County Medical Society, has provided numerous
tools and a dynamic support system to position our medical
practices to deliver optimum patient care. We meet regularly
to keep on top of the ever changing governmental rules
and regulations of the healthcare industry as well as to
feed our vicarious appetite for continuing education.

Society that in turn helped the whole medical practice
from the medical professionals all the way to the patient.
At our December Dinner Event we gave Mary Ellen a
basket full of everything "mint" (candies, chocolates,
and cookies) along with a card that said: Thanks for
all the enjoyMINT you've given us through-out the
years! Your involveMINT has MINT more than we
can say! Congratulations on your retireMINT!
We created a memorable night for Mary Ellen
and	will	continue	to	benefit	from	her	legacy.		
What kind of themed baskets have you created?
Have you used a wacky theme? Maybe you have
given out a roll of mints with the message "thank
you for your commitMINT to our team." Did you
know that according to nationaldaycalendar.com
one	of 	the	unofficial	holidays	coming	up	is	National	
Chocolate Mint Day (February 19). Why not make
your staff or family Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies?!

In December the Delco Chapter of PAHCOM met for a
Holiday Dinner Event at The Porch of the Lamb Tavern.
Each medical manager brought an unwrapped toy to be
donated to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and was
one of our great projects for our yearlong "Care Share"
program of giving back to the community. We received an
educational presentation from Mary Ellen Corum who talked
to us on the MACRA legislation which is a complex program
for physician and non-physician practitioner reimbursement.
Sadly this was Mary Ellen's last formal presentation to our
group as the Director of Practice Support of the PA Medical
Society of which she announced her retirement. At the dinner
we honored her and bid her a heartfelt farewell and together
recalled memories of her many years of service to the Medical

Also in December I hosted a holiday party for the
pediatric practice I manage. One of the activities we did
at the party was complete a crossword puzzle titled "Get
to know our Physicians better." Prior to the meeting I
asked my physicians several questions about themselves
including: what do you like to do for fun; what was the
very	first	job	you	had	as	a	young	person	where	you	got	
paid; what's your favorite sports team; do you play any
musical instruments and if so name one; etc. I used
crosswordpuzzlegames.com and created a crossword
puzzle for all to complete at the party. According to
nationaldaycalendar.com January 29th is National Puzzle
Day. I encourage you to stimulate your brain and have
fun doing and even creating your own puzzles.
