Delaware County Medicine & Health Spring 2017 - 2

WELCOME

From the President
By Joyann Kroser, MD
President Delaware County Medical Society

A

s I am writing these remarks, the sun has
finally come out after a very rainy day.
What a great metaphor for the hope I
feel for the future of medicine. Despite
all of our trials and tribulations, I am constantly
grateful to be a physician. I would like to wish
all my colleagues a happy belated Doctor's Day.
March 30 was National Doctor's Day, a time set
aside to honor those in the medical profession.
Doctor's Day was first introduced by Eudora
Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond,
who selected March 30 in honor of the 1842
surgery by Dr. Crawford Long in which ether was
used to anesthetize a patient for the first time. The
holiday was first observed on March 30, 1933 in
Winder, Georgia, with the event including cards
and flowers given to physicians and their wives.
In 1990, President George H. W. Bush signed
a law designating Doctors' Day as a national
holiday to be celebrated on March 30.
Today, there are more than 1 million medical
doctors in the U.S. with 82 percent of adults and
93 percent of children visiting a physician or
someone in the medical field in the last year.
I am privileged to engage with a great group of
physicians, medical students and doctors in various
stages of training here in Delaware County.

At our recent DCMS Board
of Directors meeting, we had
some great discussions about
how we physicians can interact
with our local community
both professionally and
personally. We have big
plans for the future of our
charitable foundation which I
hope to share with you soon.
We will also be
organizing a program
for women physicians in the near future. As the
number of women physicians grows, so does our
responsibility to care for one another, encourage
one another and inspire leadership in each other.
I hope you take advantage of some of the great
programs we offer, especially our 2017 Tools for
Success Practice Management Conference. It will feature
outstanding speakers on the topic of building bridges
between Medicine and Behavioral Health. This is a
very important subject as we face increasing numbers
of physician burnout and suicide. Accessibility to
quality mental health services for our patients and us
caregivers is crucial as we navigate the challenges ahead.
Please enjoy reading this issue of Delaware County
Medicine & Health. May spring 2017 be filled with hope,
happiness and good health and wellbeing for us all!
