the ratio of thickness
to surface coverage to
structural strength of
all building materials.

"The embodied carbon of materials
for the structures, enclosures and
construction of buildings represents
11% of total annual global greenhouse
gas emissions." [Architect, January
2020, page 103.] A 2015 inventory of
greenhouse emissions in New York state
discovered that "buildings accounted for
67% of the year's total." [Architect, June
2019, page 112.]
THE FABRIC ADVANTAGE
Given these daunting statistics and
pronouncements, you might well ask
"How can fabric help me?"
First, fabrics have the lightest and
lowest embodied carbon for the ratio
of thickness to surface coverage to
structural strength of all building

materials. Fabrics actually do a better
job of covering more area with less
material than R. Buckminster Fuller's
famous geodesic domes.
Second, by using fabrics to shade
and diminish heat gain of the building
envelope, buildings as a whole will have
lower heating and cooling loads. In
recent years, the Professional Awning
Manufacturers Association (PAMA)
commissioned a study of the energy
savings that can be attained by using
fabric awnings and shade elements.
