his is the show issue for the Geosynthetics Virtual Conference 2021,
coming up February 22-25. In addition to the two features, you will find
in this issue the Geosynthetics Product Showcase, highlighting a plethora of
new and existing products and services from companies, some of whom will
be exhibiting at the conference's virtual show floor. The conference is colocated with the International Erosion Control Association (IECA) Virtual
Annual Conference and Expo.
In the first feature, Natalie Daly and Bernard Breul profile multiple
short case studies of bituminous geomembranes for ponds in mining from
around the world. As Daly and Breul said in their abstract for the article,
" Bituminous geomembranes have a specific composite structure including
a nonwoven polyester geotextile impregnated by an elastomeric compound
based on bitumen that has specific advantages. Waterproofing a tailings
reservoir and other shale gas reservoirs asks for a geomembrane with a high
resistance to very hot water. "
In the second feature, Part 1 of a two-part article, James E. Sprague and
C. Joel Sprague take a close look at the testing of sediment retention devices
(SRDs). In the introduction to their article, Sprague and Sprague note,
" Unfortunately, SRDs are frequently selected without an objective quantitative means of knowing if the device can be expected to be sufficiently
effective in providing the desired balance between flow rate and filtration
efficiency. . . . SRD flow rate and filtration performance can be accurately
evaluated using the bench-scale standard test method, ASTM D5141,
Standard Test Method for Determining Filtering Efficiency and Flow Rate
of the Filtration Component of a Sediment Retention Device Using SiteSpecific Soil, or in large-scale 'as installed' conditions using the standard
test method, ASTM D7351, Standard Test Method for Determination of
Sediment Retention Device Effectiveness in Sheet Flow Applications. "
For everyone's health and safety, creating the first-ever Geosynthetics
Virtual Conference was a sensible choice. We live in perilous times, but the
business of geosynthetics goes on. To learn more about the conference, visit
