(Figure 3). The RGM structure is usually
a 3.3 foot (1 m) deep structure and produces
a good adhesive interface between
the soft foundation and the contained
granular fill of the mattress, and a relatively
stiff platform to ensure both an
even distribution of load onto the foundation
and a more uniform stress field
within the soft foundation.
These properties enable the basal
mattress to influence the deformation
of the soft foundation and hence may
be used to mobilize its maximum shear
strength and bearing capacity.
An RGM was used in a project in
Mexico for basal reinforcement within
a port area.
Case study: Port of Guaymas
basal reinforcement
The Port of Guaymas, located on the
northwestern coast of Mexico, is one of
the most important ports in the country
from both commercial and touristic
points of view. It manages the shipment
of agricultural and mineral bulk, fluids
and general cargo. It is an important hub
for commercial relations between Mexico
and the U.S. Southwest, moving up to 3
million tons (2.7 million tonnes) of minerals,
including copper, steel and bauxite.
In recent years, the port storage area has
been experiencing significant settlements
due to the increase of loads managed in
this area and the poor conditions of the
foundation soil.
