Proposed ASTM geosynthetics
standard will aid in road and
pavement design
ASTM International's geosynthetics committee
(D35) is developing a proposed
standard that will provide engineers with
specific information for components necessary
for road and pavement design. The
proposed standard (WK70888) outlines
a commonly used test to characterize the
performance of geosynthetics for roadway
applications. Specifically, it describes the
use of the cyclic plate load (CPL) test to
evaluate the performance of geosyntheticreinforced
pavements. While CPL tests
have been used for the past 20 years, there
is currently no standard for conducting
such tests to characterize performance of
geosynthetics. The test method covered in
the proposed standard will help establish
procedures that will ensure CPL tests are
performed in a proper and unified manner.
According to ASTM International
member Eli Cuelho, senior engineer at
TRI/Environmental Inc., the proposed
standard will be most useful to engineers
seeking to incorporate geosynthetics into
road designs and need performance information
based on reliable standardized

Geotechnical software
company Rocscience acquires
NovoTech Software
Rocscience Inc., based in Toronto,
Ont., Canada-Canada's largest provider
of geotechnical software solutions-announced
that it had acquired
Vancouver, B.C., Canada-based geotechnical
software provider NovoTech
Software. In a prepared statement,
Rocscience said this strategic acquisition
strengthens the company's current position
in the market and will allow it to
branch out into new areas of geotechnical
software development.
International Achievement
Award winners announced
The Industrial Fabrics Association
International (IFAI) announced the
winners of the 2021 International
Achievement Awards (IAA) at the
Awards and Networking Breakfast at
IFAI Expo 2021 on Nov. 3, 2021, at the
Music City Center in Nashville, Tenn.
The awards include the winner in the
Geosynthetics Category, " Segmental
Block Reinforced Structure Applied for
the Highway Interchange Project " from
ACE Geosynthetics Inc. These awards
recognize design excellence in specialty
fabrics applications in seven major categories
and 44 subcategories. IFAI's goal
with the IAAs is to promote awareness of
the specialty fabrics used in thousands of
products and applications in the rapidly
growing, $130-billion-plus-dollar global
