GRAPHENE IN GEOSYNTHETICS
Q: I have some commercial application
questions in the field of geosynthetics.
We manufacture graphene powders in the
most sustainable way, and it allows us to
supply graphene to manufacturers much
more economically. As you may have heard,
graphene has wonderful material properties
atomically to offer, and I am looking for
opportunities to leverage its performance
in thermoplastics and thermosets. Have
you worked with graphene and does it
sound interesting?
A: You should review Peggs (2019).
He describes the continued, steady
development and improvement of all
geosynthetics with an emphasis on highdensity
polyethylene (HDPE) geomembranes.
Peggs discusses adding graphene to
the master batch, which results in better
electrical conductivity and mechanical
performance of many geosynthetics. He
also points out that graphene is friendlier
to the environment than carbon black. The
technology looks promising for the entire
geosynthetic industry.

STACKING GCL ROLLS
Q: I have a question regarding the storage
and handling of geosynthetic clay liner (GCL)
rolls. The manufacturer allows stacking up
to five GCL rolls. Is this okay?
A: The answer depends on the subgrade
under the stacked GCL rolls and the
equipment you are using to handle the rolls.
In a manufacturing plant, with a stinger
on a concrete floor, you could possibly
stack nine GCL rolls high. In the field on
a smooth, prepared, firm subgrade that
cannot be inundated with water, using a lull
or forklift with slings to lift the rolls, I would
recommend no greater than three to four
stacked GCL rolls. There is some guidance
in this regard in Daniel and Koerner (1993).

and quality control for waste containment facilities. "
