American Tent provides earthquake relief
or Green Bay, Wis.-based event
tent manufacturer American Tent,
what began as a website chat ended as a
disaster relief effort.
Two representatives from the American
Federation of Teachers (AFT) reached out
to American Tent through the company's
chat feature in February, explaining that
the organization needed tents because
they were sending a delegation to Puerto
Rico to set up temporary school rooms to
replace schools that were destroyed in a
6.4-magnitude earthquake in early January.
The company responded quickly
with quotes and shipping estimates. But
American Tent wasn't satisϐied with just
selling tents to the organization.
"We realized that this was a huge
disaster for our fellow American citizens-
but at least here in Wisconsin, we hadn't

heard much about the earthquakes and
the recovery efforts in Puerto Rico," says
American Tent CEO Tony Ehrbar. "We
ϐigured since we didn't know much about
it, our social and business circles may not
know much either. We started a GoFundMe
to raise more money so that we could send
team members there to help with set up
and train volunteers. We also collected
enough money to bring soccer balls,
insect repellant, school supplies and other
supplies the AFT identiϐied as needed."
As of mid-March, the company had
manufactured 100 tents for the efforts
in Puerto Rico, including a large order
of tents donated by the AFL-CIO. Ehrbar
delivered the ϐirst 20 to the Seafarers'
Union in Philadelphia, Pa., himself
because they had to be on a ship the
following day.

The pair embarked on their pouchmaking project by enlisting the help of
colleagues at Celina Tent where Loll works,
and Snyder worked at one time. Then they
broadened their outreach by setting up
shop at the Celina Church of the Nazarene
and inviting the public to help out.
The volunteers were provided sewing
guidelines to ensure the pouches
were safe and secure for the joeys. For
example, the inside needed to be smooth
so that the young animals' claws don't
get tangled in the fabric.
Loll and Snyder's goal was to make
500 pouches, which were sent to
Australia through the American Rescue
Collective Craft Guild. Leftover fabric
was used to make beds for local animal
shelters. For more information, go to

From Ohio to the Outback
he world watched in horror as
wildϐires burned more than 42,000
square miles in Australia last year. More
than 30 people died, and there are
estimates that as many as 1.25 billion
animals may have perished.
Watching from Celina, Ohio, friends
Sabraim Loll and Brittany Snyder
knew they had to do something. After
seeing pictures of injured koalas and
kangaroos, they got the idea to use their
sewing skills to help the baby kangaroos
(joeys) that were left homeless from
the wildϐires.
The women decided to make joey
pouches that could serve as substitutes
for the pouches (marsupium) of female
kangaroos. Joeys spend the ϐirst nine
months of their lives securely in their
mother's pouch.
