Project Description: The clients wanted to
put their personal touch on this four-yearold boat. The original interior was a tan/
beige combination, and the customers
wanted to go with bright white upholstery

Project Description: The Zulu is a commercial game
ﬁshing charter vessel. The owners wanted to increase
the level of comfort and luxury for their clients to enjoy
during extended charters. This included re-covering and
rebuilding the corner lounge and side sofa, adding
drawers under the lounges to accommodate plenty of
storage, and incorporating hidden storage behind the
backrests to store ﬁshing rod racks and holders. Given
the high trafﬁc, longevity was a must and required
commercial leather and the right density proﬁled foams
stitched with polytetra ﬂuoroethylene (PTFE) threads
throughout. A challenge was that the Zulu was available
for only a very short turnaround due to prebooked

throughout. The salon dinette had nine
pieces of upholstery, including a small
ottoman. The helm seat was a double
passenger seat with many mechanical
parts. The lower station included another
large couch with ottoman and an
additional 10 pieces of upholstery. One
of the unique parts of this project was
all the detailed sewing to replicate a
similar upholstery project the clients had
seen. There was a great deal of doublestitch French seaming, and many pieces
required sew-in foam backing to allow for
more of a plush look with the leather fabric.
The removal and installation of the captain
seat was a true nightmare; many screws
were stripped in the effort. The results of
this project were amazing. The updated
upholstery made this boat look larger and
brighter. No red wine allowed here!
