TRD and ARA release non-engineered ballasting tool
T
he question of how much ballast is necessary to safely secure a tent is one
that tent rental companies have been struggling with for decades. Most newer
tents are certified by engineers to require a set amount of ballast. But there
are still many-particularly older tents or tents that have been modified from
their original design-that do not have the corresponding documentation that
can be used as a guideline for installers, but also shown to local code officials as
verification that the structure has been properly secured.
Recognizing this problem, the Tent Rental Division (TRD) of the Advanced
Textiles Association (formerly IFAI) and the American Rental Association each
independently began working on a solution for their members. " When ARA
discovered IFAI [now ATA] was already working on this problem, we decided it
would be best to create a partnership and come up with a joint solution so that
we can be consistent as an industry, " explains ARA board chair and TRD member
Dan Hooks. " We wanted to have one voice. That's one of the biggest challenges we
face-there's no good empirical data out there on this, so having one voice instead
of several is key. "
ATA's president Steve Schiffman agrees. " This is a valuable tool that will prove
tremendously useful to both ATA and ARA members. Partnering on its creation
was the right decision to eliminate any potential confusion and ensure everyone
in this industry is using the same data. "
Over the course of three years, committee members from the two associations
worked together to develop a non-engineered ballasting tool (NEBT) that utilizes
generic geometry and load assumptions to provide installers and code officials
with a best estimate of reactions for non-engineered tent models.
Now, when the local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) comes to a job site, a tent
installer can present the specifications generated by the NEBT and the code official
has a way to verify that the tent has been secured according to industry guidelines.
" Standardizing and promoting the use of best practices to prioritize safety is
a huge win for the entire industry, " says Schiffman. " We're delighted that the
partnership with ARA has resulted in a tool like this now being freely available
to members of both associations. "
ATA members can find out more information and access the NEBT online
at tent.textiles.org/resources/TRD-ballasting-tools.
The Board of Directors at INDA,
Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics
Industry, elevated Tony Fragnito from
COO of INDA to president of INDA
effective May 31. Fragnito will assume the
position currently held by Dave Rousse,
who will become president Emeritus
and provide support and assistance to
Fragnito as needed until Rousse fully
retires in January 2023.
The Society of Dyers and Colourists
(SDC) has announced Ullhas Nimkar as
its new president, heralding a new push
to advance sustainability standards for
the industry. The chairman and managing
director of NimkarTek Technical Services,
based in Mumbai, has been a member of
the SDC for 35 years. Taking over from
John Hansford, Nimkar aims to help the
society and the wider sector address
ecological and regulatory issues.

Gina Jacquart Thorsen makes history as
the first female CEO of Jacquart Fabric
Products, the parent company of the
national brand Stormy Kromer. In her
new role, she will oversee strategic vision,
company operations, sales & marketing,
product development and more.
Mannington Commercial announced that
new and refreshed products launched in
2022 across its carpet, luxury vinyl tile
(LVT), rubber and resilient sheet lines
will be 105% carbon offset. This means
customers will have the assurance of
knowing the products they specify will
be carbon negative, or carbon neutral at
the least. From raw material extraction
through manufacturing (known as
" cradle-to-gate " ), the products will
not contribute to the release of carbon
dioxide into the atmosphere, a key
driver of greenhouse gas emissions.
Mannington Commercial estimates its
total carbon offsets for 2022 will be the
equivalent to removing more than 10,000
gas cars from the road for a year.
BASF's e3 Sustainable Cotton program,
the first transparent and traceable cotton
supply chain, has announced that more
than 900 growers enrolled in the program
by registering cotton bales from their
2021 growing season, a 25% increase
in enrollment from the previous year.
Growers who are part of the program
commit to tracking eight sustainability
measures on all eligible cotton acres,
ranging from water use and pesticide
management to soil conservation and
greenhouse gas emissions reduction.
Through a series of digital platforms,
the cotton they grow can be traced from
an individual cotton bale in their field,
all the way to the end consumer.
