VFD CABLE STANDARDS AND TRENDS
Since the invention of
electricity, the cables used to
power light bulbs and
appliances have been pretty
simple, and mostly resistive
loads. In the last 30 years,
things
have
changed
drastically with the new
power requirements for bus
systems, computers, and
motor controls.
The new motor products
created a challenge for the
cable industry by designing
products that required more
than 600 V supply, higher
than normal inrush currents,
surges from a locked rotor
and speed
variation, and
controls
for
encoders/resolvers. One big
change in the last 30 years has
been the development of
precise
motor
control
through variable frequency
drive (VFD) and servo motors,
and the subsequent changes
to the cables that needed to
be made in order to power
them and transmit motor
performance.
