Automation Canada Machine Safety Issue May 2021 - 3

EDITORS NOTE:
MACHINE SAFETY:
PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS
BY OWEN HURST
This month Automation Canada is focusing on Machine Safety. There
is no question that this is and has been a primary focus of attention over
the last few years, and for good reason. Advancements in technology,
and in particular motion, have driven a need to put increased safety
measure in place to protect those working around machines and to
protect the machine itself as it executes its predetermined moves.
There are numerous methods now in place to ensure safety standards
are met, and safety assessments are o┼┐ten required when implementing
new machines or legacy upgrades. But unfortunately, these have not
wholly ended hearing accounts of injuries happening when safety
standards are not followed, or safety equipment has not been properly
implemented. And on the flip side I have also heard stories about staff
abusing the safety measures implemented to gain more break time by
intentionally tripping light curtains, however these have been rather
minimal.
However, there is no question that machine safety measures have led
to a reduction in injuries to staff and have aided in ensuring that
machines remain fully operational. There are numerous resources
available through articles, webinars and direct contact with
manufacturers and safety inspectors to ensure that your operations are
up to code and ensuring that your most valuable assets (people and
machines) are protected and operating at peak efficiency.
In this issue we have focused on delivering valuable resources to you
that will enhance your knowledge of machine safety, and hopefully also

get you thinking about new directions and where the focus in this area
needs to go as we continue to near daily develop new technology that
pushes the limits of what machines can do on their own and when
working in collaboration with individuals. I truly hope you take some
valuable information away from this important issue of Automation
Canada, and as always feel free to reach out if you have any questions or
would like to connect with any of this issue's sponsors.
