which it is possible to verify what outputs are switched off aſter actuation of each individual input. Then the online platform selects the best
combination of modules that corresponds to the selection. " " We at Pilz then build those modules together, we configure them according to the
specifications, with the aid of a computerized assembly system that ensures that the final assembly is error-free, and then we can ship all of that in one
box, " added Vaz.
A primary feature of the platform is simplicity and time savings when it comes to specifying safety relays, while also ensuring that you aren't paying
for more than you need for a given application, as Sobotta mentioned.
" From the engineering standpoint, the safety functions are the same, but with myPNOZ® a lot of time is saved when specifying, designing, and
ordering, by using the myPNOZ® Creator online platform. It also reduces installation and wiring efforts by providing a pre-configured unit, ready to
go, " Vaz explained. " Traditional safety relays have to be selected and configured, and they are usually good for only one safety function each. When
you have multiple safety functions, you typically have to wire all of their relay contacts in series, which is very time-consuming and susceptible to
human error. On the other hand, configurable safety controllers are very flexible, allowing the designer to implement a huge variety of applications.
However, a lot of time may be spent on programming and, sometimes, complex validation processes. "
" In terms of ordering, for traditional relays you will have to order single items; so, if you have one emergency stop, one light curtain and one
two-hand control device, you will have to order different items separately. With myPNOZ®, you only have one single order, " said Vaz. The same issue
happens with configurable controllers: you have to individually determine which modules you will need for each safety function, with multiple part
numbers.
Finding stock can also be frustrating when sourcing traditional relays if a particular distributor doesn't carry a particular line or manufacturer.
" With myPNOZ®, we have all the inventory parts needed to create a specific safety function. The assembly and configuration of all parts in one
whole module is done by Pilz, " said Vaz. With traditional relays, that would have to be done by the customer on site.
Lastly, we asked Vaz about the safety certifications for myPNOZ®.
" The main Canadian Standard that deals with machinery safety is CSA Z432, last edition of 2016. Its subclause 8.2.1, on safety-related control
system performance criteria, requires that 'safety-related parts of control systems (mechanical, electrical, electronic, fluidic, etc.) for newly
manufactured machinery shall provide functional safety performance as determined by ISO 13849-1 or IEC 62061' and 'existing, or rebuilt or
redeployed machinery, should meet ISO 13849-1 or IEC 62061.' So, myPNOZ® meets this requirement, because it has been designed in
compliance with both standards. Designers can also benefit from our user-friendly PAScal safety calculator tool to estimate the achieved PL in
accordance with ISO 13849-1 and/or SIL in accordance with IEC 62061. PAScal is free for downloading and the demo version of the tool allows for
the calculation of up to 6 safety functions. "
Ultimately for Pilz, the goal with myPNOZ® is to streamline the specification process, facilitate an easy installation, and deliver a product that meets
the required application exactly.
