PAINT AND COATINGS MANUFACTURING: AUTOMOTIVE REFINISHING
technologies entering the market in the next three to five years
and test our products with it, " says Cozart. " We don't want to
create a product that only sprays unbelievably today because in
two to four years, these suppliers might have new products that
have different characteristics that need to be atomised. "
" We also spend a lot of time with the end users to understand
their needs and expectations, " says Drozd. " The key for us is the
actual end user and what they're looking for in a product and its
performance. "
Live Off the Booth Floor
To say that collision repair is on a fast track to cloud-based
management, is an understatement as even paint booth
operations can now be monitored for efficiency. Accudraft
Finishing Systems, a manufacturer and systems integrator for
the finishing systems industry, offers Accudraft LIVE, a cloudbased
solution for monitoring a paint booth's performance, cost
and technical metrics.
" When you're dealing with something mechanical, it's not if
something happens, but when something happens, " says Jeremy
Winters, content creator for Accudraft, who is a former autobody
painter. " LIVE is a fully touchscreen, internet capable, mobile
solution that allows you to remotely track and diagnose what's
happening in the booth. "
LIVE's metric tracking gives the user the real time cost of
electrical and gas, shows how many repair orders (ROs) have
cycled through the booth, how long it took, and even how many
times the doors have been opened and closed.
" Years ago, painters would mix paint by eye. But today,
everything is calculated and reported by weight. And everything
goes by RO. Using the LIVE control panel, painters have to

enter the RO before they do anything so that it logs the vehicle's
progress in the booth, " says Winters. " This is a great tool for a
small shop where every dollar counts. But it's also a great tool for
Multi-Shop Operators (MSOs) for an aerial view of productivity
across multiple locations. "
One of the biggest issues for paint booths is maintenance and
filter changes. LIVE can track airflow pressure in the booths
and alert managers when there's an issue or if filters need to be
changed.
" If a booth can't breathe, bad things happen. And it's one of the
most neglected things in a paint booth. Why? I will never know, "
says Winters. " If you're in the booth and you're having an issue
with airflow, whatever might be on the floor could get kicked up
and end up on the part you're painting. It takes more time sanding
and buffing a part afterwards than it does to change the filters. "
Painters often don't want to take away from their time in the
booth. And Winters says, " Most of the time changing filters is a
pain. I get it. But the nice thing about filters now, is you can get
them cut to fit so they're easily swapped out. Ceiling filters are the
most neglected, but with the two Accudraft booths I've worked
in, changing those filters is a breeze. They have half-quarter turn
fasteners that you twist and the entire cage assembly folds down.
You can take the old filter out, pop the new one in, shut it, twist
the fastener and you're done. "
As today's vehicles becoming increasingly smarter, not to
mention the industry moving full steam ahead on changing the
powertrain over to electric battery technology, and the concept
that autonomous vehicles are not far off, manufacturers are
towing the line to take the guesswork out of new collision repair
processes and usher body shops into the new world of 4.0 smart
technology.
