PLATING AND ANODIZING: TECHNOLOGY PROFILE
resistant, " says Stigter. " There are wear parts in these pumps
that are being lubricated by the liquid that's being pumped. If for
example the liquid is water, at high temperatures like close to 100
degrees C, that water will evaporate when not under pressure.
And since there is some friction going on, the temperature of
these parts is a little higher. So what we introduced was selflubricating
seals. It's those kinds of modifications we include in
our systems. "
Whether it's industrial cleaning, plating, or anodizing, Hendor
takes a custom approach based on the liquid used, process needed,
the type of substrate that needs to be worked on and what kind of
finish needs to be achieved.
For solution agitation, Hendor has a both vertical and
horizontal centrifugal pumps. Horizontal pumps come with both
a magnetic drive or mechanical seal technology. Both vertical and
horizontal pumps as well suitable for bath agitation, circulation,
and chemical transfer. For the process, it has tank-mix Eductors
to airless agitation and homogenisation of the solution for better
solution exchange and temperature control. These Eductors also
reduce energy and chemistry consumption and create a safer
work environment without toxic aerosols.
In the plating industry, Stigter says that one of the processes
that needs constant maintenance is chrome plating. " Chromium
is plated out of electrolytes and compared to other processes,
chromium is not replenished by the anodes. It needs to be added
as a salt to the electrolytes. Those salts are never totally cured
so there's always some sulphate contamination, which is also an
active ingredient in the process. By adding chromic acid and by
drag in from e.g. tap water replenishments, often there's an access
of sulphate that needs to be removed. And there's a fine powdery
deposit being formed by the addition of another chemistry,
barium carbonate, which collects at the bottom of the tank and
needs to be removed as it will build up over time and also spread
through the process. "
" Recently, I had an inquiry for actively filtering this dust from
the liquid. We haven't sold the system yet, but according to that
customer, we are the first company able to engineer a solution
for the client, " says Stigter. " It's not a new design, but we could
combine our existing technologies to make it work. "
When developing its technologies and filtration systems,
Hendor is always
considering
the environmental impact,
and chemical pumps and filters have an effect on energy
consumption, the raw materials used and the subsequent waste.
For sustainability purposes, the company spends a lot of time in
establishing energy efficiency, carbon reduction and limiting raw
material waste. It does this, for example, by switching the energy
level of its electric motors from IE1 to IE3, which is a six to eight
per cent improvement against EU standards, it has reduced
hydrodynamic pressure losses and filter media consumption, and
offers maintenance guidelines.
" We have energy efficient motors, so you don't use access
energy, and develop efficient filter systems so they don't lose
energy just by a system pressure loss, " says Stigter. " Our standard
pumps and filter systems all have optimized power consumption
that can save you 10 to over 50 per cent in energy. An energy
efficient system might be more expensive, but once you calculate
it, that cost will be made back quickly and continue to save you
energy and money for years.
