PAINT AND COATINGS MANUFACTURING: WOOD PAINTS, PRIMERS, AND STAINS
How are coatings becoming even more
sustainable?
Sustainability is an increasingly important topic for the whole
of our society. We're always looking to extend our sustainable
product portfolio. Sustainability aspects are part of every
scoping for new product offers we develop. We are building
on this as a key offer going forward for wood coatings.
At AkzoNobel Wood Finishes, we've made it our business
to deliver the sustainable and innovative solutions that our
customers, communities-and the planet-are increasingly
relying on. Collaborating with customers, suppliers,
academia, and other stakeholders is fundamental to what we
want to achieve. It's about pushing boundaries and finding
inventive ways to collectively make a positive contribution to
an ever-changing world.
Waterborne coatings such
as
the Acquaduro 2K
polyurethane waterborne system from the Chemcraft wood
coatings brand, delivers excellent performance, water, and
chemical resistance, while also being low VOC, low odour and
virtually HAPs free. Available in clear and pigmented tintable
options, it helps to reduce air emissions, meet relevant
government regulations, and is designed to help meet dynamic
needs and contribute toward sustainability goals. Acquaduro
coatings are available via our wide distribution network.
From our AkzoNobel Wood Coatings brand, available to
OEM customers, we also offer waterborne coatings such as
the Waterborne Interior Enamel, a robust high-performance
topcoat for interior windows, doors, and trims and designed
for the toughest wood coatings needs.
The ArmorLux UV Surfacer is a UV-cured coating. When
used in combination with our engineered waterborne
interior/exterior primer and waterborne interior enamel,
the 3-step system provides superior aesthetics, outstanding
performance, and long-term durability. The system enhances,
fortifies, and transforms nominal wood finishing grades into
a premium finishing grade of lumber.
UV coatings are formulated without solvents, resulting in
a very low volatile organic compound (VOC) content and are
safer to handle in comparison to solventborne alternatives.
UV curing technology also
offers
faster
curing, which
increases energy-efficiency and minimises waste.
What product innovations have helped
applicators with efficiency and achieve a
superior result consistently?
The highly anticipated new Selva Pro 2K polyurethane and
acrylic systems, are part of the Chemcraft wood coatings

product portfolio and draw inspiration from the rich heritage
and craftsmanship of trusted, Italian-inspired formulations.
The Selva Pro range provides proven, well-rounded
performance for drying time, sanding, hardness, chemical
resistance, and pot-life. All elements of the new systems are
being manufactured in modern, North American facilities
using high-quality raw materials and follow stringent
standards for quality assurance.
The range comprises three systems to provide a complete
spectrum of sheens, from high gloss to dead flat, and
offer limitless colour possibilities for the most creative
imaginations.
Selva Pro Chiaro and Selva Pro Bianco are both high-build,
high-solids, clear and pigmented 2K polyurethane systems
which provide robust protection for wood against wear and
moisture and are ideal for areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
Durable yet soft to touch, both Chiaro and Bianco are
formaldehyde-free formulas with minimal odour. They share
the same hardener, with a consistent 2:1 mix ratio to further
reduce complexity for the user.
Selva Pro Bianco also offers unlimited colour opportunities
and excellent tinting stability (when using a neutral base),
especially with lower sheen finishes.
The third system, Selva Pro Acrilico, is a 2K acrylic system.
Its smooth formulation enhances wood grain and is ideal for
expressive and/or high-quality wood-types. Acrilico comes
with multiple finish options: a pigmented topcoat; a neutral
topcoat; a clear topcoat; and a clear 'Naturale' topcoat which
has a modern dead flat finish inspired by the latest trends.
As with Selva Pro Bianco, the Acrilico neutral topcoat, when
used with a neutral base, offers excellent tinting stability.
The range is being launched with a compact selection
of hardeners and simple, consistent mix ratios which will
ensure streamlined inventory, easy training, and accurate
application.
The systems provide substantial protection, longevity,
beauty, and design freedom so they are ideal for multiple uses,
from commercial applications such as architectural millwork
and retail store fit-outs to residential projects such as kitchens
and bathrooms. They are also ideal solutions for applications
ranging from yacht interiors to musical instruments, hockey
sticks to pool cues.
