Much of the research into new antimicrobial treatments is
concentrating on systems that combine different chemistries
for a more diverse group of substrates. Recently we have seen
their introduction into several new areas including transparent
coatings for screen protectors, silicone coatings for phone cases,
glazed coatings for tiles, powder coatings for door hardware,
water-based coatings for floor cleaning, solvent-based coatings
for metals, and urethane coatings for a high gloss finish.
2. What are some of the advantages?
There are countless cleaning treatments that specifically help
to reduce the growth and spread of microbes. However, standard
cleaning products often have limited residual activity on hightouch
points once they dry. Long-lasting, universal preventative
measures that eliminate contaminants - starting at the point
of manufacture - can address these challenges and ensure
that surfaces stay cleaner and fresher for longer. Microban
antimicrobial coatings are surface coverings containing an
active ingredient that makes them effective against bacterial and
fungal growth. These technologies can be seamlessly added to
established coating systems and require minimal mixing. They
improve the functional lifetime of the product with minimal to no
impact on its aesthetics.

. CFCM magazine had an opportunity to sit down
with the experts at Microban to learn more about the subject.
1. Are there any significant recent developments in
antimicrobial coatings formulations from your company?
Microban antimicrobial technology helps keep products and
surfaces cleaner by inhibiting the growth of microbes. We have
recently developed novel turnkey coatings systems that can be
used for both aqueous and solvent-based systems. We have a
portfolio of antimicrobial technologies that can be applied to
thermoplastics, thermosets, and other cross-linked or cured
paints & coatings. They are carefully chosen in line with desired

3. Are there any recently developed mineral additives that
show promise for antimicrobial use?
Many mineral additives can be a challenge for liquid applied
coatings due to their need to be dispersed. We have identified the
mineral additives that are compatible with coating technologies
and have a range of antimicrobial solutions available for them.
4. What are the emerging markets, or growth areas, for
such coatings?
The COVID-19 pandemic has made the average consumer far
more aware of the need for antimicrobial features in the products
that they buy, and the environments they live and work in. As
a result, the trend of including antimicrobials in coatings is
shifting from a 'nice to have' to an expectation. Microban offers
a broad portfolio of turnkey antimicrobial surface solutions that
will serve as seamless and invisible additions to any coating. In
particular, industries that use water-based coatings are showing
an increased interest in the antimicrobial solutions available
as this technology evolves. Traditionally, water chemistries are
inherently less robust and less effective at accepting ingredients
than their solvent-based counterparts, but there are currently
significant efforts working on precisely this matter at Microban.
