for Surface Finishing and was and is responsible for so much
of its direction. But possibly his greatest contribution is his
unflinching dedication to education within our industry and
his work to build a bridge to our Canadian educational facilities
such as Seneca College. Paola Battiston, Chair of Seneca's School
of Biological Sciences & Applied Chemistry, is on our board of
directors thanks to Richard. The highly successful " Introduction
to Electroplating " course in both English and French, offered in
both a classroom setting and online, is only one of Richard's many
accomplishments. Congratulations Richard.
Our great surface finishing industry in Canada and globally
Dave Paniati (Eastern US Managing Director) and Glen Breault, (VP
Americas), both of MacDermid Enthone; Robert Kuntz Jr. (President)
and Dave Kuntz, (EVP) of Kuntz Electroplating, are awarded the big
trophy for Low Gross, at 9 under par, by Richard Thibodeau, President
of Peerless Custom Rack.
" Wall of Fame " and it's populated with our true surface finishing
industry leaders, selected by a team of their peers over more
than 40 years and who are recognized here in this table, shown
alphabetically.
Mike Kuntz acknowledged the polling of CASF's membership
for suggestions for this award. After the unanimous agreement
from all on the Board of Directors at CASF and our membership
on Richard as the well-deserved award recipient, Mike continued
with the warm summary of Richard's career and his selfless
dedication to CASF and its predecessor organizations in
addition to the NASF in the U.S. In addition to the contributions
and successes Richard has made during his extensive career,
Richard epitomizes leadership at the Canadian Association
is serviced by many suppliers but there are only a few who are
enormous. On the proprietary chemistry side in Canada there
are five who fit this category: Atotech, Chemetall, Coventya,
Dynamix, and MacDermid Enthone with many smaller ones,
distributors, and professional service providers equally
significant in their chosen fields. On July 1, 2021, Atotech, backed
by buyout firm and owner, Carlyle Group Inc., was purchased
globally by semiconductor equipment maker MKS Instruments
for about $5.1 billion USF to expand its global chip manufacturing
capabilities.
On September 1, 2021, MacDermid Enthone completed the
global acquisition of Coventya and since I've worked for one
of these great suppliers for 11 years and another for more than
33 years, this is very big news for me but also for our industry
segment, too. The world of surface finishing waits to see how this
will play out, but I can already tell you from my view, somewhat
on the inside, that while no change in the real world can ever be
100 percent good, there's a lot of good coming from these two
seismic industry changes.
Regarding the costs associated with the global semiconductor
chip shortage, the hit in revenue in 2021 to the world's automakers
has ballooned to an estimated US$210 billion according to
AlixPartners, which predicts global automakers will build 7.7
million fewer vehicles in 2021 due to the chip crisis. Key supply
centers in Southeast Asia have been hit with factory shutdowns
due to COVID-19 outbreaks, extending the order delays to a
record 21 weeks. As inventory on dealers' lots has dwindled, car
