PLATING AND ANODIZING: PUMPS AND FILTERS
Nozzle Diffuser - Mixed Flow Eductors
Eductors are fitted to a manifold along the middle of the
tank floor and will generate a rolling agitation as the flow
deflects from the tank wall and circulates around the work.
Often this can be used where direct impingement needs to
be avoided. For most processes this arrangement is standard.
The positioning of the nozzles generates a highly turbulent
tank with a directional focus towards the work interface of
installation of this type of system. Process improvements
include: significant power savings, reduced emissions, faster
plating, improved distribution, lower heating requirements,
reduced brightener consumption, better throwing power, and
reduced rejects.
following power consumption estimates based on $315.00
per horsepower at 0.07 cents per kwh, 460V, with 250 days of
production and three shifts per day:
* Localised Blower
* 5 HP Blower = $1,575.00 per year (per unit)
* High-Capacity Central Blower
* 50 HP = $15,750.00 per year (per unit)

Increased Bath Evaporation Rates
Eductor System- Floor Rolling Pattern
Tuning Eductor Systems with VFD Controls
VFD controls are useful with intermittent pumps speeds,
allowing for fine tuning eductor performance with variations
in system design.
In many electroplating lines a single 50-60 HP blower
is employed. In other systems, smaller 3-5 HP localised
blowers are used, usually one or two per tank, depending on
tank volume. This inefficient bath agitation method has the
Air agitation can amplify evaporation of plating solutions
that will cause the loss of chemistry and the load on heating
elements from the cooling effect. Those energy losses will vary
based on the process temperature and volume of aeration.
Adequate Filter Sizing
Filter media surface area and efficiency ratings directly
affect starting pressure drop and required pump head
pressure. Changeout intervals are linked to initial media
pressure drop with lower levels minimising the need for
elevated pump pressure. Based on filter affinity laws, with
all process conditions being equal (e.g., flow, process liquid,
