CASF NEWS
Hear about their unprecedented challenges associated with the
accelerating pace of technological change, the need for skilled
trades in advanced manufacturing, especially with respect to
next generation initiatives, digitization, automation, robotics, AI
and other technologies.

We will welcome Adi Dunkelman, manager - Advisory at
ClearBlue Markets, to discuss Canada's Pan-Canadian approach
to carbon pollution pricing that has resulted in a patchwork of
carbon pricing programs across the country. These programs
consist of provincial carbon pricing programs (such as the
Ontario Emissions Performance Standards (EPS) program, the
federal carbon pricing system, and hybrids of provincial and
federal carbon pricing programs in certain provinces. This adds
a layer of complexity when navigating Canadian carbon markets
and for regulated entities and their decision-making. However,
it also presents opportunities to explore and leverage carbon
pricing to support climate strategies and investment.
The outcomes of COP26 have not gone away and the
expectations to facilitate carbon markets for climate action are
still there.
Regulatory and Wastewater Treatment
We have been fortunate to have Dragun Corporation's involvement
for this year's conference and otherwise. Fatemeh Vakili brings
her expertise in Hydrogeology at Dragun Corporation to give
one of our technical and regulatory-related talks. Examining the
fate and transport of groundwater contaminants before settling
legally is her topic. In order to find out who is responsible for soil
and groundwater contamination, we need to have a thorough
understanding of contaminant fate and transport. There are
several processes that control contaminant fate transport in the
subsurface. She will explain these processes in " plain language "
and then provide some brief case studies to demonstrate the
importance of these processes.
Continuing the technical discussion, acting as a break from
a world of macroeconomic supply chain crises, Aziz Gherrou,
PhD. chemist at Metafix Inc. out of Montreal, Que. will shed
light on new environmentally-friendly ways of treating metal
contaminated wastewaters.
Chromium, in its hexavalent form (Cr6+), a heavy metal used
in a variety of industrial applications, is highly toxic to humans,
animals, plants and microorganisms. For this purpose, the most
commonly used approach to removing it from wastewaters is
its reduction to the form of trivalent chromium (Cr3+), the least
toxic, and then its precipitation as hydroxides. This conventional
method poses different health and safety and environmental
challenges because it involves the use and handling of hazardous
chemicals, and generates significant amounts of toxic sludge
transported and disposed of at technical landfills. At this
conference, we will introduce and discuss a new green technology
using zero-valent iron (ZVI)-based filter developed to recover
and recycle some metals, such as, chromium, copper and nickel,
without any use of chemicals. Metals concentrations are reduced
to values below the discharge limits and recovered as a recyclable
material. We will show the results obtained at industrial scale at
two anodization facilities in the Montreal area.

Manufacturing, like many other industries,
has been impacted by COVID-19 and supply
chains in various ways. In CME's recent
Management Issues Survey, 80 per cent of
Canadian manufacturers said they are facing
an immediate labour and skills shortage, which
has been amplified by the pandemic.
People, Talent, Jobs: Where do our finishers and chemical
supplier colleagues fit in this new competitive realm?
Perhaps it is naïve to think manufacturers as employers would
hold a position of strength in the jobs market. Whatever the
steps are in this chain of reactions, that has globally led to those
working in manufacturing to carry more day-to-day duties to get
the job done while trying to fill key roles and find the right people.
It should not be lost on anyone in any industry that some of these
right people have arrived to our communities by circumstances
none of us would want to be in.
It will be refreshing to hear Julie Ruben Rodney and her team's
perspective on this. Julie is the founder and CEO at MaxPeople, a
people development organization. Julie focuses on helping people
maximise their performance both individually and with teams.
She is an experienced facilitator, consultant and keynote speaker
in the areas of interpersonal communication, teambuilding,
leadership development and creativity.
