An Entertaining Thought on Creating

a Culture of Safety
At the beginning of every season, we should all give special thought and consideration
to the topic of safety because in spite of the glorious spring weather we may be enjoying,
the water will still be shockingly cold, there could be debris in the water and
occasionally, boats malfunction after a winter of disuse. Accidents happen.
Our readers are a well-educated and experienced group who care a lot about boating
and because of that, many have invested their time to take boating courses from the
Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons, Sail Canada and other organizations. They will have
extensive safety knowledge.
At Canadian Yachting magazine, the importance of safety is near and dear to our
hearts as well, but we have to recognize that it's not a subject that interests ordinary
people, even when they are invited out boating. At least, not until they need their
safety equipment!
We hope they never do need it and statistically, most people enjoy boating for a lifetime and never really have a mishap. In addition to that, each of us by nature believes
that "it could never happen to me".
Fighting human nature is always going to be particularly challenging, but I have an
idea that might help you raise the boating safety interest level with your group of family
and friends.
The Canadian Safe Boating Council will tell you that the single most important part
of your boating safety equipment is your personal flotation device, or life jacket. It's a
mandated piece of safety equipment and the excitement aspect is pretty low.
So, what if there was a way to generate a little additional interest in both the
personal flotation devices themselves, and the likelihood of your family or friends
actually wearing theirs?
When the water has warmed up, choose a nice sunny day when people want to go
swimming anyway, get out the PFD's and toss them out into the water. Then, invite
everybody to dive in, find their PFD and put it on in the water.
An important detail is to make sure there's somebody on board to videotape
the mayhem!
Even young people who are fit and strong swimmers, will find that locating their
PFD is a challenge, and putting it on in the water is close to impossible. The concept
here is to make it good clean fun and something that will be memorable, but something
that will also leave a strong impression. Under good conditions and with no pressure,
putting on a lifejacket in the water is almost impossible, so can you imagine what your
odds would be if there was an accident?
I don't want to get too grim here because the overall concept is to try and make
boating safety more interesting and more personal. Giving them the challenge of
putting on a life jacket in the water should leave a lasting impression. I believe that
fun exercise could help you in the very worthwhile quest of creating a culture of safety
around your boat.
