DESTINATION | THE NORTH CHANNEL

A " BUCKET LIST "
CRUISE TO THE
NORTH CHANNEL
Story | Jennifer M. Smith
northeast of lateral buoy A91, where we
anchored with three other boats.
The following day, winds were unfavourable and in one of our better decision-making moments, when the other
boats left the anchorage mid-morning, we
picked up our hook and tucked in a little
further, opting to stay put for the day. As
we launched our dinghy, locals sailed past
in their nimble keel boat and invited us for
drinks, making our decision to stay even
better.
A low-speed dinghy ride, exploring the
places we can't get into with our 6-foot
draft, is one of our favourite things to do,
so we loaded up our life jackets, grabbed
the iPad for navigation and jumped in our
3.10m RIB (15hp) to zip up to the head
of the inlet. After the friendly marina

In 2016/17, we were sailing in the
Bahamas, contemplating bringing our
Vancouver 42 sailboat up the ICW and
into the Great Lakes for the first time.
There, " Loopers " told us that their favourite part of the Great Loop was the North
Channel. Since then, it's been on our
bucket list.
On August 1st, we departed
Penetanguishene for a 24-day trip. We
motor-sailed northbound in light air, travelling 42 NM under mare's tails, toward
our first stop at Killbear Provincial Park.
From all but southerly winds,
Kilcoursie Bay at Killbear offers good
protection. Ashore, you can picnic on the
beach or sun yourself on the smooth granite headlands. The park also offers hiking
trails of varied lengths, from a 25-minute

lighthouse walk to a 3-hour walk along
the Recreational Trail. Unfortunately for
us, as the cirrus clouds foretold, our day at
Killbear was spent hemmed in by pouring
rain.
From Killbear, we motored up the
inside passage. Not needing services early
in our trip, we passed by Pointe au Baril to
anchor off a friend's cottage in Sturgeon
Bay. After a slow morning, we exited the
channel, passing the famous front range
lighthouse and the barrel on the point at
midday.
Weather buoy real-time conditions
promised moderate westerlies and soon
we were beating our way north. We turned
in at Alexander Passage, toward Bayfield
Inlet, navigating with caution up the
well-marked channel to a small cove just
