skinny dip.
The low-lying wooded Louisa Island with its east-facing
U-shaped anchorage was our next choice for an overnight stay
in windless conditions. Fire pits on the beach indicated its popularity for evening campfires, but garbage in the bush beyond was
discouraging.
We'd read about the pretty pink granite islands of Croker and
the Benjamins and so we headed that way next. Even on a marine
chart, the circular structure of the islands is apparent and the

change in geology obvious.
We carefully picked our way into the stunning bay on the
southwest side of Croker Island. It wasn't hard to see why this
was a popular location. A walk to a high point on shore provided
lovely views of the anchorage and beyond. Under sunny skies,
over calm waters, we enjoyed a long dinghy ride to Sow and Pigs
islets, then around the south end of South Benjamin, where we
stopped for a refreshing dip and marvelled at geological features.
In this COVID-summer, we imagined that these anchorages
had far fewer visitors than they normally would. Still, Croker's
southwest bay filled up throughout Saturday and by early evening eight small powerboats rafted up near the beach with their
music cranked up like a dance club, drowning out the persistent
hum of the generator on the 65-foot motor launch anchored
nearby. As lovely as it is, Croker Island may not be everyone's
idea of paradise.
With a developing moderate westerly, we moved to the east
side of the Benjamins. We'd heard it was poor holding and found
it difficult to set our anchor close-in on the smooth rocky bottom.
Eventually, we hooked and enjoyed the afternoon swimming and
stand up paddle boarding.
With only a week left in our schedule, it was time to turn
the bow south. The marsh-like environment in the calm waters
between East and West Rous Islands was a pleasant stop for a
night. Here, we saw turtles and pike as we paddled our boards
through pink-flowering swamp smartweed, discovering beaver
lodges as heron took flight.
