MERCURY INTRODUCES A
600 HP OUTBOARD MOTOR!
It sounds like a gag headline - a 600 horsepower outboard motor?
It's real. The Mercury Verado 600 features a V 12 engine. That's
right - a 12-cylinder outboard engine and it's a quad cam, fourvalve per cylinder design with 7.4 litres of displacement. And,
it hangs on the transom just like the 9.9 on your dinghy. Well,
that's a bit of an exaggeration.
It looks like a regular outboard hanging out back there,
but the mounting bracket is far bigger and stronger than anything we have ever seen before and the engine doesn't turn
when you turn the wheel; the lower unit turns. That way, the boat
designers and builders can mount two (or more) of these V12s close together
without having to leave clearance to turn the whole engine and by just turning
the lower unit, the engineers at Mercury were able to significantly increase the
steering angles for better docking performance.
Of course, these feature all the advantages of joystick docking. A pair of
Verados can pivot the boat, crab it sideways and even hold a position out in
the water while you wait for your turn at the fuel dock.
With 600 horsepower, you would expect to be at the fuel dock frequently,
but no, not so much. Mercury has given the Verado 600 a two-speed automatic
transmission! It gives this incredible outboard amazing acceleration and top
speed, with better fuel economy.
What is the world coming to?!!
It's coming to boating. Globally, boat builders are going full-out building
new boats and yet many builders are sold out and back ordered. A few of the
big European sailboat builders have said they are sold out for a year or more.
One recently announced they would not catch up until after 2022.
Blame this on COVID19. It hit the whole planet, all at once and the way
of coping with stopping the spread was to limit travel and human interaction.
It's been a nasty solution for many people, but it has been a solution that made
owning a boat, a very desirable thing.
Here is where it affects our Canadian Yachting magazine readers. Outdoor
recreation has emerged as one of the few enjoyable things we can safely do,
boating is a top choice and you are a boater. Regardless of what type and size
of boat you have, it may well have gone up in value this winter.
Your boat may also have suddenly assumed a more important place in your
recreation plans too. I'm guessing that many families are looking at their boat
in a whole new light.
In this April 2021 issue of Canadian Yachting, as we all get ready for the
start of the boating season, consider contacting your marina right away about
service and spring launch. There's not a moment to lose. They will be crazy
busy this spring. If, for whatever reason, your boat isn't a part of your future
plans, this could be the ideal time to list it with a broker. See our story " Why
Use A Boat Broker? " on page 48.
If you are keeping it and cruising your home waters, check out the cruising
destination stories in this issue; Georgian Bay - A " Bucket List " Cruise to The
North Channel and PEI - Boating in the Birthplace of Confederation.
If you are dreaming of other destinations, just go to the Canadian Yachting
website where there are decades of destination stories as well as tech articles,
boat reviews and more...all FREE for your enjoyment. www.canadianyachtying.ca
