Canadian Yachting Special Feature: Dinghies and Davits Spring 2020 - 14

...................
After thoroughly cleaning your inflatable, apply a UV protectant.
In talking with our ad hoc panel
of experts, each had a preferred
cleaner and protectant, based on
their years of experience. The one
thing they all mentioned is to be
aware of what is in the cleaner you
choose. Some cleaners are rather
mild. From that you should understand that elbow grease may be required to get out stubborn dirt and
stains. Some are more aggressive, so
you need to know what chemicals
are in the cleaner - in particular
what acids - oxalic, hydrochloric,
phosphoric, etc. For that reason, any
time you use any cleaning product,
do it outdoors, away from the water
(to protect our environment), and
wear gloves and eye protection.
Two key times to clean your inflatable are in the spring, when taking it out of storage and in the fall
when putting it back in storage.
This is also the time to apply a protectant like 303 Aerospace Protec-

tant, Aurora Poly Guard or AquaTek Vinyl Guard. For cleaning the
tubes, follow the manufacturer's or
dealer's recommendations.

can outfit your inflatable with a
console and wheel steering, radar
arch, Bimini, fishing rod holders,
GPS mounts - almost anything you
can put on a fibreglass boat, can be
mounted on the right-sized rib. Figures 6 and 7, these images are from

Not Your Granddads
Dinghy - The Growing
Market of RIBs as the
Primary Boat
A final trend came out while talking with Patrick Hardy and Andre
Robitaille Manager of BCI Marine.
While Brig represents what we
cruising boaters think about as
tenders for our primary boats, BCI
also distributes what can be considered the gold standard of inflatables - bow riders and open boats
with radar bridges, Biminis, high
power and even a marine head.
There are many changes in the
inflatable dinghy market. When
looking for your first - or replacement boat - review the words of
these experts, draw up a list of your
needs and wants and prepare your
questions before attending the boat
show in your area. Get the right
boat for your situation and you and
your family will be prepared for
many enjoyable hours on the water.
