Canadian Yachting June 2018 - 4

AT THE HELM

June 2018

Christmas in June
We are six months into 2018, but to me, the June issue of Canadian Yachting is like
Christmas Eve: When it's finished and we mail it out to your home in early May, we
start our boating season here in Ontario - I'm like a kid at Christmas. There is so much
to look forward to once the summer of 2018 gets going.
The life of a boating magazine editor is that I spend all fall and winter at my desk
writing about boating, so when I finally get to actually go out on the water, it's a very
big deal! We are planning a really busy summer of boating and you will be reading all
about our adventures in the upcoming issues of Canadian Yachting magazine.
Some of the plans we have already made include The Galley Guys trying out the
new LeBoat cruise on the Rideau Canal - something we have been looking forward to
for a while! - cruising to Grenada, and exploring northern Michigan, Georgian Bay, and
Lake Simcoe.
Volvo Penta has invited us to Newport for the North American stop on the Volvo
Ocean Race and North Sails has invited us to Nevada to see their amazing sail-making
facilities. That is just one of the technical stories we have planned for the 2018 / 2019
Canadian Yachting issues.
We are planning more how-to and maintenance editorial for those readers who
enjoy doing projects on their own boat, and we will take a sharper focus on gear and
new products. Look for a bigger and better Nautical Fashion feature in 2019.
DIY and Tech Topics we are planning for the coming year include a compass
rebuild for our do-it-yourself column and profiles on some of the latest in marine electronics for navigation, pleasure, and safety. Of course, we will be travelling to various
events being held by boat builders to do performance reviews on the latest and greatest
new boats for the upcoming issues of Canadian Yachting. Boat reviews are always very
popular reading!
Every year, we travel to the most influential or impactful boat shows including
Annapolis, Fort Lauderdale, Miami, and the trade only event - the International
Boatbuilders Exposition. Lately, we've been sending writers to some of the most important European boat shows as well, and we will be bringing you news and information
from around the world in the coming 12 months.
But first, we hope this June issue of Canadian Yachting proves interesting and
inspiring as you head into your summer of 2018. Jennifer Harker writes about her trip
to Killarney on Georgian Bay and on the West Coast, Catherine Dook debates the ageold question: Where is the best ice cream?
Katherine Stone takes us to the Bay of Quinte Yacht Club while the Galley Guys
suggest some ginger recipes and other "little secrets" to help your boating guests keep
their sea legs and enjoy the trip as much as you do.
On the safety front, we debate the benefits of both traditional pyrotechnic distress flares and the new electronic strobe versions, and of course, we profile two
great new boats: The amazing Ranger Tugs R23 and the award-winning Jeanneau
Sun Odyssey 490.
We hope that you are looking forward to the summer of 2018 as much as we are!
