THE ELECTRIC MOTOR
The growth in choice of electric motors for
boats is exciting. Soon, there will be few
areas of boating that cannot benefit from
clean, sustainable technology. In the chart
below, you can see just a sample of
available electric motors from the 2 hp
Minn Kota outboard motor to the 40 hp
Elco inboard motor.
When you look at the technology of
various electric motors, you see the elegant simplicity of different designs. The
Torqeedo 1103 C (boats up to 1.5 tons)
provides and integrated lithium
battery/electric motor combination. Elco
has developed their own line of 48 volt
alternating current (AC) motors - rather
than direct current (DC). Why AC?
According to Elco's website:
... The AC motor has unequaled reliability, simplicity of design, efficiency and
ultimately lower cost. ... The efficiency of
the Elco AC Motor is 85-92% - over 30%

more efficient than a DC motor and over
40-50% more efficient than a combustion
motor. The AC motor is rated for up to
50,000 hours. With only one moving part,
there isn't much that can go wrong and the
motor requires virtually zero maintenance.

THE ENERGY STORAGE
SYSTEM (BATTERY BANKS)
The 3 battery technologies available to
boaters are the flooded lead acid batteries,
absorbent glass mat (AGM) and one of the
variants of lithium. The choice of which
battery is completely dependent on what
you want the battery to do. With internal
combustion engines, the purpose of the
house bank and the cranking battery are
completely separate and easy to understand. For boats with electric motors, that
difference is not as cut and dry.
Flooded lead acid batteries require
more maintenance than the other two,
which are sealed and require no maintenance. If a lead acid battery is overcharged, the electrolyte boils and off
gases hydrogen - a volatile and explosive
gas. This is an important reason to
ensure the battery compartment is properly vented. Topping up the electrolyte
