Stay Home
and Go Boating
Welcome to the June 2020 issue of Canadian Yachting magazine. I'm proud to say that
our readership includes many extremely capable and experienced cruisers. Canadian
Yachting readers have cruised to, or gone boating in, all sorts of places in the United
States, throughout the Caribbean and even across the Atlantic to Europe, and across
the Pacific to Hawaii and even more distant ports to the west. Some are "loopers", some
are sport fishermen. Well, borrowing our June issue theme from the COVID-19
pandemic, here are many powerful reasons to STAY HOME!
Our June 2020 issue of Canadian Yachting magazine celebrates some of the breathtaking beauty and easy boating that Canada offers. We have a whole host of places that
will leave you wondering why we would ever go anywhere else!
Our cover story features a classic 1948 Shepherd runabout as its lucky owners take
a day trip on the scenic and very sheltered Rideau Canal from Manotick through several
locks and lakes to the 8-lock flight that goes right between Canada's Parliament Buildings and the historic Chateau Laurier Hotel. This trip was chronicled in a TVO
Documentary with lots of aerial footage and the best view of this UNESCO Heritage
site that you will ever see. The link to the video is in John Morris' story, The Rideau:
Living the Past Today.
We also wanted to share some special photography of other great Canadian boating
locations in B.C., Georgian Bay and Atlantic Canada.
Another major feature in our June Canadian Yachting is Henri de Cotret's very
detailed cruising notes for the St. Lawrence River to Lake Champlain. The history,
scenery, and the restaurants in the towns along the way are all delightful! And, if Quebec
is a bit far to do in your own boat, consider the many options to charter a vessel locally.
Henri lays it all out for you.
For that matter, there are boat rental and boat charter companies in almost every
significant boating area in Canada; another thing that makes it easy to stay home.
To make room for so much destination cruising editorial, we only have one boat test
this time but it's a dandy; the Axopar 37XC with twin Mercury Verado 300 V8 outboards.
This is a very innovative boat with strong performance and a surprisingly attractive price.
Also in this issue, we acknowledge the growing interest in the environmentally
friendly boating choices like new lithium ion and solar power opportunities and
re-powering with electric motors. Craig Ritchie writes Power Play about new lithium
batteries and solar power and veteran cruiser Rob MacLeod, "The Informed Boater"
covers a range of electric motors and the power systems that support these new choices.
We especially hope you enjoy the beauty and photographic excellence that we are
fortunate enough to have for you in the June issue of Canadian Yachting.
This will be a very special year to re-discover Canada and the world-class boating
areas that we can access when we stay home. But please, as you prepare to go out and
enjoy your summer, don't forget some of the important practices we have all had to learn
this year. Stay home and stay safe.
