CROSSING THE LINE

Story | John Morris

Self-Isolation - You get to vote
This really has developed into a problem.
A quick peak at our article schedule
shows that every second issue we feature
a profile of a key figure in the boating
community. For this June issue, I had
some blockbuster personalities lined up,
but as you can understand, I am working
at home in isolation. Due to COVID-19
limitations the only candidate accessible
for an interview was... me.
As you can imagine, John interviewing
himself gets pretty dreary, pretty quickly.
Under these pandemic imposed restrictions the necessary solution was 'creative
embellishment.' Here are three potential
background profiles on this columnist. You
be the judge.
INTERVIEW V1
As a child growing up in Portofino, I never
got to play ball or tag in the streets like most children. No, it was
yacht parties, sundown oysters and endless Aperol spritz until I
screamed for chocolate milk like the other kids. Please mama, a
peanut butter sandwich on wonder bread, just once. She punished me that day with yet a third bubble bath. I was mortified.
By the time I was 19, my days had become a blur. Was it Sofia
or Carolina, was my crew casting off for a couple of days in Capri,
or just an afternoon of sun and champagne? As always in that
dashing ecru capitaine outfit. Sure, I was handsome and the
choice of debutantes, but was I happy?
INTERVIEW V2
"Grab the end of this tree and we'll run it through the planer,"
my dad chuckled. "And take off those sissy gloves; this is man's
work."
Hand assembling a lapstrake wakeboard boat from the ground
up was no mean feat, but Dad made it look like building with
Lego, fitting each buttress with a handmade dowel rather than
some flimsy bolt 'like those ramshackle mass produced yankee
rigs. If it's worth doing, it's worth doing twice and getting it right
the first time, he'd often repeat.
Now put on this blindfold and re-assemble the Johnson. You
should be able to tune a carburetor in a hailstorm without getting
grease on your sandwich. Never mind those Canadian Tire skis,
build your own from these cedar planks he'd bark at me, offering
me a tug from the Screech bottle. Yes, I was only seven, but I
learned the lessons that still guide my boating to this day.

INTERVIEW V3
Recalling the fiddling at the kitchen parties still makes my feet
dance, even these many years on. The womenfolk would spread
the gingham tablecloths with homemade pies, fresh bread and
sardines to warm us up as we came in from the regatta.
As the years went by, regattas became a more and more
exciting part of my life. I slept on the camp cot in the Commodore's locker and ate the fish and chips at the bar every evening.
I practiced every morning and spent the afternoon ironing the
race committee flags, inflating the tetrahedron marks and
alphabetizing my Mount Gay hat collection.
After sneaking past Buddy Melges, Paul Elvstrom and Dr.
Stuart Walker in the C&C 26 Worlds, I knew I had arrived.
My friends all had boats; I was in love with a beautiful and
tactically brilliant foredeck beauty. My life was perfect, my
dreams had been realized.
IN SUMMARY
You pick the story that works best, then add this concluding
paragraph:
Then I joined the Canadian Yachting team and here you find
me, slaving at the keyboard to fill this lonely space. I can't wait
for this pandemic to end. *
