Welcome to the May 2020 edition of Canadian Yachting magazine and to a boating
season unlike any other ever. As I write this we are in mid-April and here in Southern
Ontario, the weather is improving, the ice is long gone and I am already seeing boats
out on the lake, but I was surprised to see them there.
As parks are closed now, public launch ramps are closed. In fact, at the end of last
week Boating Ontario received and circulated a letter from the Provincial Government
detailing the mandated business closures to stop the spread of COVID-19 and the letter
was sent to expressly clarify that marinas in the province are closed to recreational boating until later in April, and possibly beyond that.
The entire world is supposed to be "self-isolating" and going boating through a
marina, is not allowed in Ontario at the moment. Other provinces are taking a similar
stance and in Atlantic Canada travel bans have been put in place. At first, there were
differences but it is now becoming a clear message to just stay home.
So, we sincerely hope that this issue of Canadian Yachting magazine, which was
planned to have useful information for boat owners and cruisers, still provides enjoyment
and a "happy place" for our readers as we navigate through these uncharted waters.
In this issue we have a profile of Krates Marina in Keswick, Ontario that is cottage
country just 30 minutes from the subway.
Katherine Stone researches eye care and the importance of protecting one of the
most useful organs that any of us own - our eyes! The sun will again dance across
the water for all of us this summer - we're just not sure when we can go. But when
we do, every boat should carry an anchor. It's really an important part of the vessel's
safety equipment.
When it comes to actually anchoring out overnight, it's a blend of "Science, Art
and Experience" that Rob MacLeod, The Informed Boater shares with us in his Special
Feature story.
The experience part includes trying to remember all of the times Rob and his wife
Mary dragged while at anchor. Rob covers several categories such as longest distance,
most embarrassing, highest potential danger and more.
Andrew McDonald joins us this issue to talk about Deck Repair. Whether you
have a fast powerboat or a sailboat, the effects of flexing and movement, exacerbated
by the pounding movement of water, and the elements of sun and rain attacking from
above, can damage your decks resulting in spider cracks in the gelcoat, or the feeling
of a 'soft' or 'spongy' spot in the deck. Andrew explains how he has repaired decks
with different problems.
Of course, we have new boat reviews featuring the Greenline 33 Hybrid and the
new Beneteau 30.1. And that reminds me, if you find yourself at home with some time
available, why not take the Canadian Yachting website out for a spin? We have literally
decades of boat reviews that you can easily search for.
The same is true for cruising destinations. Just go to canadianyachting.ca and type
your question into the search bar. There is almost endless boating enjoyment available
for you at no charge!
So, here is wishing that we can all pass the time enjoyably and safely until we can
meet again on the water! Scan this code with your device camera to read more great
content at www. canadianyachting.ca.
