ARE THE GOOD OLD DAYS
AHEAD OF US?
After our April issue of Canadian Yachting, we received a couple of
letters from readers commenting on the absolutely quantum leaps in
technology lately recently. The first was a response to the April
" Crossing the Line " column titled, Just Because We Can...
(does it means we should?) by John Morris. Sonia Day,
from Fergus, Ontario wrote:
Three cheers for your Crossing the Line columnist,
John Morris. He's absolutely right. The America's Cup
races have been turned into the dullest event in the world.
Thanks to the obsession with high tech and speed, they
have more in common now with car racing than sailing. The
only exciting thing about the event this year was when American Magic
capsized and nearly sank. Shortly after that, I stopped watching.
Oh, for the days when we could thrill at the sight of stunningly beautiful white yachts scudding through the waves, their big sails billowing
out. And for females like me, the crew in their sexy white shorts provided
a nice bit of eye candy too.
But those grey-garbed " grinders " crouched over their hydraulic gizmos, not even seeing where they were going? Forget it. Boring, boring.
And what a hellish job that must be. Yes, like being a galley slave.
Hydraulic foils may make things faster, but where's the entertainment
factor? The America's Cup has lost me as a viewer.
My own " At the Helm " column in the same issue titled, Mercury
Introduces a 600 HP Outboard Motor! prompted this response from
James W. Clark of Brockville Ontario. He wrote:
I just received my April issue of Canadian Yachting; a 600 hp outboard,
OMG!
In the mid 20th Century I worked briefly on coal fired steamers:
A 250 ft canaler, typically 500hp.
A salvage tug, 275 hp.
And yet, they want to install two (600 HP Mercury outboards) for a
total of 1200 hp. For anyone who has read Farley Mowat's book " Grey
Seas Under, the subject of the book the " Foundation Franklin " had a
1200 hp engine. How times have changed...
I share these two letters with you, because I wonder if these new technologies make boating more enjoyable. Volvo Penta talks about Easy
Boating and their Assisted Docking system does make docking easier.
That may lower the barriers to driving a larger boat for less experienced
boaters, so I agree that's good.
The America's Cup involves unimaginable cost and engineering
complexity, but Michael Kermarec, the French hydrodynamics expert
from American Magic is now leading the Swedish Candela electric boat
company.
Candela is building the next-generation of runabout-size power boats
and they will be electric-powered foiling boats that can make a 25-knot
cruise with a 50 nautical mile range on electric power only.
At Canadian Yachting, I work with, report on, and truly appreciate the
new technologies, but I treasure the simple pleasures of boating. I've
been feeling that the future may be getting too complicated, but perhaps
I've been too quick to judge.
As soon as COVID restrictions allow, we will be back on the water
with our in-person reports on the latest boats and technologies. 'Can't
wait!
