had set in. We heard of boat races to be held that summer
in Kempenfelt Bay, so we headed down the Trent-Severn
Waterway to take in the races.

Johnsons, Evinrudes and Mercurys. I don't remember who
won the race but the experience never left me. I found out
much later that the Yellowbird team was highly successful
and, for three consecutive years, secured the U2 National
High Point Sportscraft Championship Award in 1967, 1968
and 1969. In the following years, other manufacturers' horsepower grew and Chrysler outboards became uncompetitive,
so the team disbanded. Yellowbird's illustrious career came

asked his permission to name her Yellowbird III. Not only was
Joe good enough to permit the name usage, he also shared
with me clippings from that time and agreed to sell me the
original Speedmaster lower units off Yellowbird II. They are
currently stored waiting for the right project to come along.
Yellowbird III now ventures out of Goderich harbour on calm

at Picton, Ontario. Not to be outdone, Miss Supertest III won
the World Championship Harmsworth Trophy 3 consecutive
times in 1959, 1960 and 1961. She was later retired after
the tragic death of her driver Bob Hayward in 1961 at the
Silver Cup Regatta on the Detroit River.

Two decades after first seeing Miss Supertest, I moved
to Brights Grove, Ontario where I started to learn about
the area's marine history. A defunct local boat company,
Mac-Craft, started out in 1938 building pleasure vessels in
the Wallaceburg area but with the onset of World War Two
