CANADIAN YACHTING

THERE'S NO PLACE

LIKE HOME

When I wrote the At The Helm column for the June issue
of Canadian Yachting, (which went on press before the
May 24 long weekend in the midst of the COVID-19
pandemic), I said "Stay Home and Go Boating!".
Well, Canadians did exactly that - and they did
it in droves with marinas, lakes and rivers busier than
ever. Through the many industry contacts we have at
Canadian Yachting Media, we have heard about marinas
and dealers selling out of both new and used boats once the
season got going. Our boat brokers echoed the same story - everything was selling. One of our associates said there were 40 empty slips
at their yacht club last year; this year it's full.
Anecdotally, by July in most areas of Canada, Sea-Doo's and
Yamaha Waverunners were sold out. That's an interesting fact because
many new boaters gravitate to personal watercraft. They are affordable, easy to drive and very exciting. To underscore the new boater
aspect, another industry associate who operates an on the water
boat-driving training business said it was his busiest year ever, by far.
It's great to hear about new people getting into boating and better
still, to hear that they are getting training. We sure hope that continues!
A marine industry newsletter recently carried a story about
American boat buyers and the important data from an industry survey
of boat buyers across America, was that the average age was dropping.
In fact, in the United States, through mid-2020, the average age of
new powerboat buyers decreased by almost two years compared to the
same period last year, according to Info-Link Technologies, a Florida
firm that tracks new and used boat registrations. Info-Link managing
director Jack Ellis said that for the first time in a decade, the number
of new boat buyers under 40 surpassed the number of buyers over 60
in the United States.
We do not have comparable boat buyer data for Canada, but our
changing demographics may be following a similar path and that will
be good for boating in the future as a new generation of boaters will
take their families to Canada's abundant waters.
Of course, we take the COVID-19 global pandemic very seriously, but the need to restrict travel and to mandate social distancing
has made boating more attractive than ever. We certainly see a positive
aspect in the increased time families are spending together and boating
seems to fit the bill.
In upcoming issues of Canadian Yachting we will be adjusting
our editorial plans to address the changing world of boats and boating
with new ideas and our usual in-depth reporting on boats, boat design
and the evolving boating lifestyle that is attracting a growing audience.
In the June issue of Canadian Yachting magazine, we encouraged our readers to re-discover Canada and the world-class boating
areas that are our heritage as Canadians. We are delighted to see that
so many people did stay home and stay safe. After all, there's no place
like home and for Canadians, there's no better way to see this great
country than from a boat.
You may have also noticed that Canadian Yachting has a new
look with this issue. We hope you will find our layouts and graphics refreshed, brighter and more enjoyable than ever. We have a new
designer on the Canadian Yachting Media team and she brings a more
youthful, contemporary feel to the magazine as well as to our digital
media; Canadian Yachting OnBoard Digest and Boating Equipment
News. We hope you enjoy our new look and we welcome your
comments!
