Echo Spring 2021 - 13

Mary (Jennings '10) Edwards, Director
of KidMin at Gateway Church, gives a
Christmas message.
included a food pantry, at-home Easter egg hunts, drive-through
Mother's and Father's Day celebrations, online worship geared
toward kids and outdoor " Sunday Experiences " over the summer with
pop-up tents, coolers of water, blankets on the ground and bins of
supplies.
" Seeing that the Church can adapt and be just as effective was a
beautiful sight! " Edwards said. " God is at work, and His eternal
truths do not waver despite what our culture may face or even a
pandemic. We worship a God who 'is the same yesterday and today
and forever.' He is our rock even through the challenges of the
last year. "
Edwards also takes to heart the CONNECT purpose statement: To
inspire, equip, encourage and support each other so that individually
and together we have a greater impact. " This ministry equips ministry
leaders who then can share and pour into their teams, " she said.
" Ephesians 4:12 (says) that the role of apostles, pastors and teachers
is 'to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ
may be built up.' CONNECT partners with ministry leaders to do
just that. "
Like Edwards, Kobi Martin ('19), a Pastoral Ministry major at LBC |
Capital who today serves as Children's Pastor at Hopewell Church in
Elverson, Pennsylvania, views CONNECT as an invigorating part of
his ministry. " I think the most helpful part of CONNECT for me is the
way it helps me to step out of my own head, " he said. " It's easy for
me to be so caught up in details and what needs to happen for this
Sunday. CONNECT helps me interact with strategies and thinking
on a larger scale and longer term than just this next Sunday. And the
interactions with other ministers just makes it all that much better.
I love it. "
At Hopewell, Martin oversees all ministry from nursery through
sixth grade on Sunday mornings. Monthly family nights reach the
community while also giving church families valuable quality time
together.
Martin first interacted with CONNECT as a student in Zimmerman's
children's ministry classes and has kept attending as he graduated
into his role at Hopewell. Especially in 2020 and 2021, he's thankful
his involvement has continued.
" This year has been isolating and suffocating for so many, especially
those in leadership roles, so CONNECT has done great to keep up its
mission even when it's hard, " he said.
Through his classes, Martin was able to learn from Zimmerman's
expertise, which includes 13 years serving as a children's director
for a global missions organization and involvement on the Luzerne
Children's Forum. She and her husband, David, have also written a
children's curriculum that has been translated into 30 languages and
is used in 70 countries. Today, Zimmerman teaches LBC | Capital
courses such as Pastoral Care of Children; Discipleship of Children;
Theology of Children, Youth & Family; Teaching Skills for Children;
and Community Ministry, where students take field trips to ministries
such as Bible2School, Water Street Missions and CrossNet Ministries.
Experiencing these " beyond church " ministries reinforces for students
that " God's love is for all kids, " she said.
" (Children) are asking and answering the big questions of life-with
or without us, " Zimmerman added. " If we're not doing children's
ministry well, everybody is playing catchup for the rest of their lives.
We need more people who have God's heart for children and are
equipped to do something about it. "
