Echo Spring 2021 - 36

Dr. James Ayers ('80), Professor Emeritus in the Church & Ministry
Leadership Department, has revised and re-launched his website with
some new resources. Visit his ChurchWorks site at jamesayers.org.
Dr. Ron Belsterling, Professor in the Church & Ministry Leadership
Department and Youth & Young Adult Ministry Program Director, recently
provided Community Bible Church of Marietta, Pennsylvania, with
Attachment-Relationship-Ministry (ARM) training for its high school
ministry team. For the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, he wrote a
devotional, translated in multiple languages with several hundred-thousand
subscribers for Table Talk, and was interviewed on the podcast Youth
Culture Matters. Additionally, for a colleague, Andy de Feu of Moorlands
College/U.K., Belsterling wrote the foreword to a new book on ministry.
Lastly, he also presented on ARM for the International Association for the
Study of Youth Ministry at its January 2021 International Colloquium with
Asian and Australian participants.
Melissa Boas, Program Director for the Master of Education in Professional
School Counseling, hosted a leadership panel discussion for current
LBC | Capital graduate students taking the Leadership and Advocacy
course. The leadership panel was an interactive opportunity for current
students to learn from LBC | Capital alumni currently working in the field
of Professional School Counseling in local public schools. Alumni who
participated included: Christopher Fake ('19), Michaela Landis ('20) and
Jonathan Taylor ('11 & '18). The panel was encouraging and inspiring,
featuring how LBC | Capital Professional School Counseling graduates are
making a difference in society.
Dr. Daniel Carver ('09), Assistant Professor in the Bible & Theology
Department, published a peer-reviewed article titled " Vision Signals and
the Language of Vision Descriptions in the Prophets " in the Journal for the
Study of the Old Testament. This study takes a semantic and pragmatic
linguistic approach to the visionary materials of the prophetic literature
and examines how and why the prophets describe visions. Carver also
co-authored a peer-reviewed research article with Edward M. Cook
titled " Situation Aspect, (UN)Boundedness and The Participial Periphrastic
Construction in Biblical Hebrew " in the Journal of Semitic Studies. This
paper provides a comprehensive and uniform description of all the
participial periphrastic constructions in Biblical Hebrew that account for the
use of each one and calls into question the claim that a second ('preterite')
function of the construction was developed in Late Biblical Hebrew.
Dr. Mark Eckel, Adjunct Professor in the Church & Ministry Leadership
Department, contributed his essay, " Before Outsiders: Apologetics in Every
Course, Across the Curricula, for Life, " to the book " The Good, the True, the
Beautiful " celebrating the work of Dr. David Naugle.
Cheryl Stewart Elliott, violinist and Adjunct Professor in the Music,
Worship & Performing Arts Department, appeared with her husband, Tom,
on trombone, at Westminster Presbyterian Church's evening worship
service on March 28. Both graduates of Curtis Institute of Music, this was
their fourth presentation of " The Gospel According to Bach, " which is an
adaptation of part of Bach's St. Matthew Passion for solo trombone, solo
violin, string quintet, continuo and narrator.
