LBC Echo Fall 2022 - 39

Division II All-American in 2011 and 2012 and was the
NCCAA East Region Player of the Year both years as well.
Both Bird and Turner were named to LBC's Women's
Basketball 50th Anniversary Team earlier this year.
Rempel is the men's basketball program's all-time leading
scorer. His final season with the Chargers was Beers' first
year as head coach, and the pair helped guide LBC to a
19-8 overall record. Rempel scored 724 points during his
senior season and was named to the NCCAA Division II
All-American First Team. He was an NCCAA East Region
First Team selection in 2000 and 2001 and was named
NCCAA East Region Player of the Year in 2001. Rempel's
1,979 points are the most in program history, and his 23.6
points per game are the second-most.
Rempel's dedication to the program was evident from Day
One, and his ability to make his teammates better left a
lasting impression not only with them but also with his
coaches. Rempel was part of some of the biggest wins at
the turn of the century and helped build the foundation that
Beers and many others have expanded since. In addition to
his Hall of Honor recognition, Rempel was also honored in
February as part of LBC's Men's Basketball 50th Anniversary
Team celebration.
The Class of 2022 will be honored at a special dinner during
Homecoming & Family Weekend on Sept. 23 and will be
publicly honored prior to the women's soccer Homecoming
match on Sept. 24. Saturday's festivities begin at 11:30 a.m.
at the Donald H. Funk Field at Willis & Martha Herr Stadium.
A new Hall of Honor website is live at lbcchargers.com/
hallofhonor, and a new interactive display will be open by
Homecoming in the lobby of the Horst Athletic Center.
This past spring marked major milestones for LBC track &
field standout Leah Bergey ('24), as she won the NCCAA
National Championship in the 100-meter hurdles and
also competed at the NCAA Division III Men's & Women's
Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the same
event.
Bergey won the 100-meter hurdles at the NCCAA event
in May with a time of 14.56, as she became the first
individual to win an NCCAA Championship in LBC history.
The only other NCCAA Champion was the 2014-15 men's
basketball team, which captured the NCCAA Division II
National Championship.
After initially missing out on the NCAA Division III
Championships by 0.01 second, Bergey was notified the
week of the event she had qualified after another runner
pulled out with an injury. Bergey, teammate Emma Rohn
('25) and Men's & Women's Track & Field Head Coach
Melissa Baughman made their way to Geneva, Ohio,
for the championships, and Bergey finished 20th in the
100-meter hurdles.
" It was such a great experience, and I am so proud of
(Leah), " said Baughman after the race. " She worked hard
this season and I'm so glad she got this opportunity. "
In addition to Bergey's terrific spring, teammates
Elijah Herb ('23) and Trey Baughman ('22) also had
breakthrough seasons, as Herb finished second in the
110-meter hurdles at the NCCAA Championships, and
Baughman was fourth in the high jump. Both Bergey and
Baughman were honored by the U.S. Track & Field and
Cross Country Coaches Association this summer for
their work on the track and in the classroom.
This summer, Lancaster Bible College inducted 28 studentathletes
into the National College Athlete Honor Society,
as the Chargers were one of six United East Conference
institutions to induct members for the Chi Alpha Sigma
Class of 2022.
The other United East institutions included Gallaudet, Penn
College, St. Mary's (Md.), SUNY Morrisville and Wells, as
125 student-athletes from the conference were inducted.
The Chargers led the way with 28 student-athletes being
inducted.
