Joel G. McCluen ('59) of Chesterfield, Va., went to be with
the Lord on Feb. 16, 2022. Many family members and friends
shared in Joel's life. He is survived by his loving wife of 62
years, Mary, one son and a granddaughter who is an LBC |
Capital alumna: Mary Erica Crouse ('18).
Guy R. Eshelman ('60), 89, was called to heaven on May
30, 2022, following a brief battle with cancer. He was a
lifelong Manor Township potato farmer and a graduate of
Penn Manor High School. Throughout the years, he was a
sales representative for Pioneer Seeds, Lebanon fertilizers
and chemicals and spool irrigation systems. He was actively
involved in Lancaster County Ag in the classroom and served
on the Board of the Farm and Home Center. He was known
for his inventiveness and ability to fix almost anything. He
completed small engine studies at the Pennsylvania State
University. Guy was a Corporation Member of Lancaster Bible
College since 1961 and a graduate of LBC's Evening Institute.
He was a member of Calvary Church since his youth and
served on the Board of Directors of Teen Haven and then
Water Street Mission from 1997 to 2013. His greatest joys
stemmed from his faith in Jesus, his family and friends and
serving others. Guy loved people, and he and his wife kept
an active social life, entertaining in Lancaster and in Fort
Lauderdale, traveling and attending events with friends. He
was a prayer warrior, mentor, nurturer, encourager, protector,
host, chef and godly example. He also enjoyed family
genealogy and was quite the historian. He is survived by his
wife, Mary " Molly " (Clark), as well as a son, two daughters,
nine grandchildren, two stepsons, a stepdaughter, seven stepgrandchildren,
11 step-great-grandchildren, a sister and
a sister-in-law.
Patsy " Pat " F. Ritchie (WBC '61), 84, entered her heavenly
home on April 7, 2022. Born in Lancaster, she graduated from
Pequea Valley High School and while at WBC met David G.
Ritchie ('61). They married after their graduation. They then
embarked on a journey overseas and lived in Japan for five
years, returning to the U.S. in 1969, eventually settling in South
Jersey. The Ritchies co-owned ServiceMaster of Vineland.
Throughout her life, Pat continued to study the Bible and
led and participated in Bible studies in church and in the
community. Her heart and home were always open to those
in need of love and compassion. Besides David, she is survived
by a son, daughter, three grandchildren, two sisters and
extended family members.
David K. Fenton ('73), 71, passed away July, 7, 2022. Born in
Philipsburg, he graduated from Penn State University in 1970
with an associate degree in business and with a degree in
Christian education from LBC. He played basketball while
at LBC and met his wife, Penny (Carney '74). David was a
member of West Liberty Baptist Church and enjoyed spending
time with family and friends. He also enjoyed playing multiple
instruments, watching sports and playing basketball. In addition
to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Shelly (Fenton '99)
Smith, and three grandchildren.

MEMBERS
George L. Baumgartner, 98, an LBC | Capital
Corporation Member, went to be with the Lord
on May 13, 2022. Born in Allentown, Pa., he served
in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.
Following his discharge, he received a bachelor's
degree in chemistry from Muhlenberg College
and worked for 20 years as a chemist, primarily
for the Armstrong Cork Co. Feeling that the Lord
was calling him to ministry, he accepted the
position of Executive Director at Calvary Homes in Lancaster
in 1970. Under George's visionary leadership, Calvary Homes
experienced an extensive expansion of its physical facilities
which, coupled with the development of numerous innovative
services, greatly expanded its mission and ministry. More than
6,000 older adults benefitted from the leadership he provided
until his retirement in 1988. In 2021, Calvary Homes dedicated
Baumgartner Personal Care on its campus in honor and
recognition of his contributions to the community. He also
served God in a number of roles at Lancaster Bible College
and Calvary Church, where he was a member. George was
elected to the Corporation of then-Lancaster School of the
Bible in 1969 and elected secretary of the Board of Trustees
in 1974. He was a 20-year trustee and continued on the
Corporation until his death. During his time of service to LBC
| Capital, George was a member of the Executive Committee
of the Board and chaired the Finance Committee, while also
assisting with the presidential transition from Stuart E. Lease
to Dr. Gilbert A. Peterson in 1979 as well as being part of the
journey to Pennsylvania Department of Education approval
and Association of Biblical Higher Education accreditation. His
wife, Jane, led the Stewardship (now Advancement) Office for
over 20 years, retiring in 1985 after successfully completing
the Golden Jubilee capital campaign in 1983. For decades,
George and Jane were a consistent presence in the life of LSB
then LBC-giving sacrificially, volunteering time and leading in
various ways. George enjoyed games with his grandchildren,
tennis, golf, time at the beach and shopping with coupons. He
will be remembered for his warm, welcoming personality and
generosity and is survived by his daughter, son-in-law, four
grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Robert Nelson, 95, LBC | Capital Corporation Member, passed
away June 25, 2022. He was a 1949 graduate of Wheaton
College and had moved from Lancaster back to Illinois in May
2022. Bob married Doris Nelson in 1950 in Pasadena, Calif.;
she passed away in 1995. He then married Betty Poppinga in
2002 in Montclair, N.J.; she died in July 2021. One of Bob's
favorite Bible passages was Hebrews 10:23-25: " Let us hold
unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is
faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on
toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together,
but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see
the day approaching. " He is survived by three children, two
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
