And if all this scenery looks familiar, that
is probably because you've seen it before on
Hulu. The town of Clifton Forge is featured in
the Hulu original series " Dopesick, " starring
Michael Keaton. While not mentioned by
name in context of the series, Clifton Forge
serves as the setting for the drama unfolding
around the opioid crisis in the early 2000s.
Viewers may also recognize several other area
landmarks, such as the Low Moor Mine and
the Jackson River. Many area residents were
extras or had small roles in the series, whose
first episode premiered to a sold-out showing
at the Masonic Theatre in the fall of 2021.
While these venues may be front and
center of the Highlands arts scene, there is
no overlooking the influence of the Alleghany
Highlands Arts Council, a non-profit
organization that has worked since 1953 to
bring educational and artistic programming to
the Alleghany Highlands.
The Arts Council works tirelessly in
partnership with the Masonic Theatre, Arts
and Crafts Center, and Alleghany County
and Covington City public school systems
to entertain, educate, and inspire the next
generation of creatives. These entities bring
artists and shows, such as the Missoula
Children's Theatre that many residents would
not have the opportunity to see otherwise.
