RECREATION/TOURISM Jackson River Scenic Trail The Wonders of Alleghany Outdoors Whether you're seeking a remote hiking trail or a rolling river run...organized recreation or spectator sports...you'll find it all in the Alleghany Highlands. Recreation is one of the most important assets of the Alleghany Highlands. From walking to fishing and from boating and hiking to overall fitness and competition, the Highlands has easily accessible areas for each of these activities, and more. Whether you're on your own in your travels or accompanied by family or friends, there are plenty of recreational activities for all. The Jackson River Scenic Trail, perhaps the crown jewel of trails in the Highlands, is a popular trail for residents and visitors alike in Alleghany County. This rails-to-trails project offers trail-goers views of fields, flowers and 18 Alleghany Living trees as well as local wildlife along the Jackson River. The trail was implemented in phases with the final phase scheduled for completion in 2022. " The Jackson River Scenic Trail has continued to grow in use with locals and tourists alike. I'm excited that phase 5 of the project is underway. This autumn you will be able to hike/bike from the City of Covington through Alleghany County and end up at the newly constructed trailhead in Bath County. The Jackson River Scenic Trail will be a destination rail trail that will bring outdoor enthusiasts to the region, " says Chad Williams, Director of Parks and Recreation for Alleghany County.
