2022 Alleghany Living Guide - 19

The Jackson River Scenic Trail, a mostly flat
trail, is composed of smooth, crushed gravel,
which makes it the perfect walking and biking
experience for those of all skill levels. The
southern trailhead is in downtown Covington;
from there the trail heads north for 16 miles
through Alleghany County and into Bath
County. The Jackson River Scenic Trail has
multiple access points with spacious and wellmaintained
parking areas. While the trail is
ideal for casual walking and biking, the trail
is also utilized for organized events like bike
races and marathons.
The Alleghany Highlands Chamber of
Commerce & Tourism plans a variety of
outdoor events each year for the outdoorsy
adventurer, and even for the beginner, unsure
of which they prefer. The most popular event
is The Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon,
Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k, which is an out
and back race event. Each race begins and
ends at the Intervale Trailhead. Competitors
enjoy a shaded canopy throughout their race
in addition to well-stocked rest areas staffed
by wonderful volunteers along the trail. This
event attracts individuals from all over Virginia
as well as the surrounding states.
Another popular event planned each summer
by the Chamber is the Agony in the Alleghanies
Gran Fondo. The event offers multiple courses
which all feature the beautiful scenic views of
Alleghany County. In order to accommodate
various skill levels, two Medio Fondo courses
are offered: a " Medio Mountain " option that
tackles the Warm Springs Mountain Climb,

to get a trip on one of the trails or
on any portion of the Alleghany
