Lake Moomaw
and a second Medio Fondo option that offers
a more level route. The Gran and Medio
Mountain courses include the King and
Queen of the Mountain contest, which times
the Hot Springs Mountain portion of the
course. The fastest male and female riders
are crowned the King and Queen of the
Mountain. The Piccolo Fondo, the shortest
ride, is one of the flattest Piccolo Fondo
courses ever offered. This course is a favorite,
especially by beginner riders. All of the rides
offered come with course timing, technical
support, fully stocked rest stops, and food
and beverage at the finish lines. More

At Lake Moomaw each summer, US Masters
Swimming certified swimmers are invited to
participate in an open-water one-mile race
20 Alleghany Living
organized by the Chamber.
The starting mark is at Cole's Point on Lake
Moomaw, an area clearly visible to spectators
and race staff. The course runs along the shore,
turning around buoys, and follows the same
path back to the finish line.
The top three men and top three women
finishers are awarded following the race,
making for an exciting race day.
Alleghany Outdoors, a local recreational
outfitter, is located at Intervale Trailhead
on the Jackson River Scenic Trail.
Alleghany Outdoors can assist with
exploring the outdoors of the Highlands
by providing bike rentals and shuttles for
those that wish to explore the trail. Kayak,
canoe, and tube rentals are also available
for those who wish to adventure on the
region's Blueway, running through the
beautiful mountains of the highlands.
