2022 Alleghany Living Guide - 27

The AHEDC announced at the beginning of
2022 the implementation of new marketing assets
to better represent the region. New resources include
a refreshed mission, vision and values, a new logo
and website, a fresh photography library and a moreactive
branded social media presence on Facebook,
Twitter, and LinkedIn.
In the past year, work began to create a padready
site, buildings have been readied for reuse and
downtown revitalization efforts are moving forward.
There are nearly 40 buildings available for existing
businesses looking to expand or businesses new to
the area -all ready to welcome growth in the region.
Small businesses and nonprofits benefited
from grant programs facilitated by the Chamber.
The Small Business and Nonprofit Recovery
Grant provided monetary resources to help
small businesses pay utilities and rent/mortgage
payments during the pandemic.
While there are a handful of chain business
locations in the Alleghany Highlands, the small,
locally owned businesses are beloved destinations for
visitors and locals alike.
Even when the COVID-19 pandemic was
at its peak, local businesses still enjoyed the
dedicated patronage they needed to keep afloat in
unprecedented economic times. Several notable
restaurants in the area remained popular locations,
but adjusted as needed throughout the duration of
the heightened pandemic.
Jack Mason's Tavern, located in Clifton Forge,
had customers rushing back in when they reopened
their doors. The owners opened back up slowly,
starting with a small amount of bar seating, then
outdoor seating and eventually working back to
opening tables and booths.
The tavern celebrated its 12th anniversary in
November.
" Times have changed, but your support
remains strong, and we sincerely thank you for
that! " Wendy Hudler, co-owner of the restaurant
said in a Facebook post.
Like the tavern, another locally owned restaurant,
Family Tree-T's Cafe seemed to have business increase
once they reopened to the public. Tawnya Ross, the
owner of Family Tree-T's Cafe, had been pursuing a
career in business and culinary, but then decided to
open a restaurant on her own when the opportunity
arose. This was coincidentally right around the time
that COVID-19 spread to the Highlands.
" There were many customers that have been
nothing but supportive when we have needed to
take a break, close for whatever reason, and have
been flexible with all of the changes we have been
making, " she says. " This hasn't been easy for any
of us. We are very thankful for our staff and the
supportive community. "
