in the merger-had been in place for years. Each
student in the county had a Chromebook or
other electronic device for learning provided to
them by the school. When schools shut down
and instruction shifted to virtual, teachers in
the school system rose to the challenge. Their
outstanding efforts resulted in students outpacing
statewide math scores by 10%.
With access available, it was simply a matter
of having the content ready to access, and the
Alleghany Highlands Regional Library helped
meet the challenge.

only had notes, they struggled, but whenever they
could meet virtually with their teacher or follow
an instructional video, they had a much easier time.
And I thought, 'We're a library. We should have
those videos available.' "

they had a much easier time. And I thought, 'We're
a library. We should have those videos available.' "
Hicks created the " Learn A Lot In A Little " video
series and opened up submissions to educators in
the Highlands. They were quick to respond with
differentiated video instruction for all grade levels
in dozens of topics, from MLA formatting to basic
reading skills to algebra and geometry.
